As soon as I saw that claymation style trailer for Super Dark Deception I knew I had to play this game. The thing is, this 2D action horror style game was really causing me some memory issues as I was certain I had played it before and then it hit me, this is a 2D remake, or demake if you prefer of a game that came out a few years ago! That just got me even more excited to check this out as I actually played and kind of liked that game, despite its flaws. I have spent a lot of time with this and while it is not perfect, I still think that it has some charm.
Dark Deception
As you have probably already figured out, Super Dark Deception is a 2D remake of the game, Dark Deception. The title is quite clever as it is made with the intention of looking like a Super Nintendo game. That game was a survival maze horror game where you were in a nightmarish world and had to do all that you can to escape it, only to end up in a new nightmare. From what I can tell, they have pretty much the exact same premise going on here, but to be fair, I actually like this and think that it is a cool story for a horror game to have.
Super By Name
I get that some people may be so over the whole 16-bit pixel art thing that so many games do, but Super Dark Deception does it just right in my opinion. I grew up with the Super Nintendo and to this day, it is my favorite system of all time. The Super in the title here as I said, is a throwback to that and this game certainly has that Super Nintendo look. It reminds me of something like True Lies or Zombies Ate My Neighbors with the style of 16-bit sprites that they have gone for here. It looks and moves very well and it even has an absolutely kick ass 16-bit soundtrack. For me, the presentation is the best thing that this game has going on for it and that is what drove me to keep on playing.
Run, Hide Or Die
The gimmick of the gameplay in Super Dark Deception is that you can actually not fight back against the monsters and nightmares that are trying to get you. You can stun them and run away, but you cannot technically kill them! This is similar to the game Outlast which I loved and the idea is certainly great. As you progress through the game, you can earn XP which will get you new abilities that can help you survive longer. I like the idea of the gameplay here, it is basically just all about survival, and that can lead to some pretty tense and exciting moments, but it more often than not ends up being frustrating.
Learning From The Past
While I enjoyed Dark Deception, that game had some problems and it felt like a very unfair game, Super Dark Deception is exactly the same, perhaps even more unfair. The monsters are way to aggressive and sometimes spawn so close to you that it is near impossible to avoid them, they can gang up on the exit and make it impossible to exit and the whole game feels like it is there to frustrate you. It is even more frustrating as I feel like there could be a good game in here, but it is just way too difficult. Do not get me wrong, I had fun with this and I would get on a good roll, but there were many times when I died where I legit felt like there was absolutely nothing that I could have done in order to survive.
While I do think that Super Dark Deception is unfairly hard, to be fair, so is the original Dark Deception and the intent of this game was to make a Super Nintendo style version of Dark Deception so in that regard they did nail their goal. I can see why for some, this is just too unfairly difficult and they would say, screw this game and not play it. For me, that Super Nintendo style presentation kept me playing longer than I would have thought and I did have fun, but for every 10 minutes of fun, there were like 3 solid minutes of pure frustration and you have to weigh up if that is worth it at the end of the day.
Pros:
- This game looks like a Super Nintendo game and that is awesome
- It can be very exciting and thrilling sometimes
- They have made a 2D version of a 3D first-person game
- I enjoyed the soundtrack
Cons:
- This is not just a hard game, it can often be unfairly hard
- Sometimes it is more frustrating than fun
