Super Mario 3D Land is delivering what fans of the franchise have often conceptualized. It's a classic side-scrolling platformer reminiscent of old games brought to life in a 3D world with all our favorite characters and level designs. The game seems like it's attempting to create a new benchmark in the Mario series, and when it's tried to do this, it's never really failed to deliver.
The Mario series has branched out into many gameplay styles over the years since the classic platformers. You'd feel it was about time that the gameplay of old made a comeback. However, can mechanics so dated still appease a legion of critical players? Can the developers bring the modern edge into the series to keep Super Mario relevant? Let's enter Super Mario 3D Land!
It's Back to Basics in 3D
The premise of many Super Mario games has never been the most emotional narrative. However, it's one of the strongest in video game contemporary culture. Therefore, why change what doesn't seem to be broken? Super Mario 3D Land agrees with that statement. It keeps the storyline at a minimum not to intrude on the classic gameplay. It's the old tale of Bowser kidnapping Princess Peach. Mario needs to rescue - blah, blah, blah.
But that turns out to be just fine. To be honest, it's the same narrative we want against the modernized platforming mechanics of classic Mario. You'll jump, dash, power up, and overcome the many foes and obstacles that hinder your rescue attempts. While it may sound the same as previous efforts, the end result is arguably near perfect.
You don't know how much you've missed something until it's been away for a while. Super Mario 3D Land is exemplary of what an excellent platformer should be. The brilliant level design, the challenges, and the immersive 3D environments remind us why this franchise is still so prominent today. Players will enjoy every second of the game as the nostalgic gameplay comes to life for the modern-day.
There are new items, enemies, and challenges to face, all seamlessly designed to maximize the entertainment from Super Mario 3D Land. It's not forgotten about the new generation of players, too. The game is more accessible than the other platformers have ever been. And while that may bother some hardcore fans, in reality, it's rekindling passion for one of the most popular gaming franchises in the world.
The Bar Goes Even Higher
Super Mario 3D Land reiterates why the franchise is so good. It's comforting, entertaining, challenging, and more, all in one palatable platformer. Even great platformers like Kirby's Blowout Blast don't hold a candle to this massively immersive side-scroller. Many would even beg the question of any flaws to a game with such praise?
Many find it a nuisance that Super Mario 3D Land is more accessible than other offerings. It's not going to erect the same wall of hardcore challenges some gamers are used to. However, it doesn't deter much from Super Mario 3D Land is an excellent, well-rounded game. It's one for the platforming books, that's for sure.
