The Last of Us Part I

As one of the most beloved and acclaimed games of the PlayStation 3 era, The Last of Us garnered over 200 Game of the Year awards. It is a game that is revered, but it would be fair to say that it probably needed some updating if you were to play it today. With that in mind, enter The Last of Us Part I.

This update of the original takes many of the features of the first game and improves upon them in subtle but important ways. From improves mechanics and visuals to simply making parts of the game that felt outdated play a little more smoothly, this update of the original The Last of Us does a lot to transform the game for the better. If you missed out the first time around or find the original edition to be a touch dated, then The Last of Us Part I is for you.

An incredible story brought back to life

The plot of The Last of Us is simple enough in its setting, but becomes increasingly more unique as the game develops. A modified version of cordyceps has managed to essentially turn the majority of sentient life into horrific biological equivalents of their original form. The world is overgrown and in disrepair, and much of civilisation is simply barbarous tribes of people looking to survive.

You take the role of Joel, a survivor who is tasked with taking a young girl, Ellie, who appears to be immune to the contagion, to a place where she could potentially be used to help create some form of cure or reversal. To get there, you need to work your way through a stunning world complete with an intriguing story, an engaging cast, and a storyline that keeps taking intriguing turns you likely did not expect.

All of this combines to create a uniquely enjoyable experience that is hard to forget about once you start. If you want a game to compare The Last of Us Part I to, then the obvious choice is its successor. However, while it might not share the gameplay of something like Days Gone or the themes of God of War, or even the calmness of Death Stranding, you will find that it shares many of their attributes.

The perfect update of the ideal game (9/10)

So far, The Last of Us Part I has garnered huge praise for just how well it manages to tell this outstanding story. It updates much of what felt dated from the original, and it transforms some of the gameplay sections that would not feel as enjoyable today as they did in the original release.

9

The only real negatives would be that The Last of Us Part I does not change enough – though that might feel like an unfair criticism given this is more of a re-release and update as opposed to a full remake or remaster.

Pros

  • Takes what made the original so good and improves upon it
  • Excellent performance despite the highly improved new visuals
  • Old gameplay has been updated and improved to make it feel smoother

Cons

  • Perhaps does not change enough of the originals dated sections
  • Even with updates, still feels older and more dated than the sequel

Game Reviews

If you're a gamer who hasn't heard of The Last of Us Part I by now, you've probably been living under a rock. The title has critical acclaim as being one of the finest action-adventure games ever to grace consoles, spawning a sequel, a television show, and various other incarnations of the game. Now, it's returning as a re-release upgrade for modern hardware, adding another angle and even more immersion into the mix.

As a sequel now exists, the game has been branded as The Last of Us Part I, bringing more consistency into the storyline. Now, we already know that the game is fantastic. So what we need to look at here is the standard re-release checklist of whether it's worth reinvesting in a classic. Is it visually improved? Are there significant gameplay improvements? And finally, do we get a thrill out of the experience all over again?

The First of Us

It's been a while since I played The Last of Us, and I have not replayed it since its initial release in 2013. The game was one of those experiences where I was so content with the title the first time around playing again might have hindered my impressions, where I wanted to hold that special experience dear. However, ten years on, it's time to experience the thrill, especially with all these visual improvements.

The core focus of The Last of Us Part I is to modernize the title and make this story-rich experience immerse more modern hardware owners. You probably wouldn't need to guess that it succeeds massively. The visuals now look outstanding, adding a new dynamic to the already-established dark storyline. But not only that, there are even more surprising improvements to the game.

AI is much better; facial animations capture emotion more, and a few more gameplay options, such as additional assets to enhance the experience. It's not a re-release; it's a complete remake to fix the less-than-appreciated nuances of the original and make this massive title even more relevant in 2023. Combat feels better, the story feels even more affluent, and the animations make particular areas even more terrifying.

Rare is it when a company decides to re-release or remake a game that there feels to be so much more dynamism. Naturally, the omission of multiplayer or additional gameplay modes desired by fans is a letdown. But you can't deny that The Last of Us Part I reignites the same thrills and spills you got when you first played the title ten years ago.

Goosebumps Eternal

The Last of Us Part I is the textbook method of how old games should reemerge on the market should that be a decision made by the publishers. There has been an outstanding balance focusing on how to rekindle passions for players' past while retaining and enhancing every aspect of what made the game great. It manages to do what Final Fantasy VII did with its remake, two rare beans in a pot of achievements.

So the answer to that age-old re-release question of whether you should play it again is, yes, The Last of Us Part I is entirely worth it. Understandably, players will be miffed by having to pay for a full-priced title. However, the improvements, enhancements, and modernized experience do the cost justice; it's simply sublime.

Round-Up - Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Visual improvements bring the acclaimed game to life even more
  • Enhanced AI and animations add a more thrilling experience
  • Arguably the definitive version of the game

Cons:

  • Lack of multiplayer and additional game modes disappointing
