Warbox Sandbox

Create some of the most epic battles the world has ever seen with Warbox Sandbox. The sky is the limit for the amount of carnage you can create in this game as you come up with some of the most outlandish battle scenarios you can imagine. It's a concept we've seen before, but Warbox Sandbox takes it a step further by including more player interaction in some of its core mechanics.

As long as you don't mind an AI that seems more concerned with awkwardly exploring the environment than fighting in an all-out war, Warbox Sandbox doesn't disappoint.

Wacky Warzones

Much like Totally Accurate Battle Simulator, the goal of Warbox Sandbox is just to come up with some of the wildest battles one can conjure. Want to see an army of pirates take on an entire WWII infantry corps? You can do that in Warbox Sandbox.

It's not an entirely unique formula, and it seems as if the game knows that perfectly well. However, there's something that some gamers might be pleased to know, and that's that Warbox Sandbox goes for a completely different presentation style than what we saw in TABS.

Low-Res Carnage

While the battles in Totally Accurate Battle Simulator could get rather intense, they never were outright violent. The game used a cartoonish visual style to represent all of its action, with colorful characters with googly eyes featured as the main characters in a variety of roles.

Warbox Sandbox pursues a different path. While the game is not what I call "realistic" with its visuals, they are clearly more elaborate than what we saw in TABS. Characters are still presented in a low-res format, perhaps to accommodate for the larger masses always on display, but they're less stylized than they were in TABS.

There's also more blood and gore in this game, which could be a plus for some players looking for a more realistic action experience.

Get into the Action

Warbox Sandbox allows for a good degree of player interaction in its simulated battles. Surprisingly, there's also a first-person shooting mode for weapons, should the player decide to take matters into their own hands – which they'd certainly want to do because the game constantly struggles to make units fight each other.

The AI in Warbox Simulator simply can't handle some of the more complex scenarios. Units will struggle with pathfinding, wandering aimlessly on the battlefield until they come across some other stranded unit to fight.

That's one of the reasons why the battles look less believable than they did in TABS. However, the developers seem thoroughly invested in this game, so we might see some upgrades coming sometime in the future.

8

Warbox Sandbox provides a comprehensive toolset to come up with some of the wackiest battles we've ever seen, even if its AI struggles to make these encounters seem interesting.

Pros

  • Great performance, even in the densest battles
  • First-person mode shooting
  • Somewhat realistic character models

Cons

  • Dumb AI
  • Not much unit variety at the moment
  • Some glitches and disappointing texture work
