You get to relive the adventures of Jake and Finn in Adventure Time: Pirates of the Enchiridion. The game is based on the popular cartoon. In this game, you attempt to rescue the Land of Ooo from water submersion, and find out the culprits responsible for the flooding.
The gameplay borrows some elements from JRPG games like the Persona series of games. You control popular characters like Jake, Finn, Marceline and BMO. You control Jake and Finn more than any of the other characters.
You fight enemies on both land and sea. You use weapons like your fists, fireballs, swords and magic. As you attack an enemy, you accumulate energy for more powerful attacks. There are light, heavy and special attacks. The combat is turn-based.
You unlock new character abilities by completing quests, levelling up, and collecting currency from treasure quests lying around the game world. But once you upgrade your character to a certain level, the game becomes too easy and routine for you. You can easily finish all enemies and bosses by spamming the same moves over and over again. The simplicity of the game was designed to attract kids.
Sometimes, you’ll need to interrogate non-playable characters in a minigame as you try to find out who caused the flooding. The dialogue is often interesting and it contains elements from the cartoon:
The game world is divided into areas, with each island linked by the ocean. When traveling via the ocean, the game characters will sing songs that give you more information about the story. Traveling between the islands is slower than expected.
You can’t explore the world fully as the game features linear quests. You need to switch to specific characters to complete certain quests and move around the islands. The game world is largely empty and devoid of life.
The game has a few bugs that affect the sound, animation and gameplay. You might even need to restart the game at times when you encounter some bugs.
Overall, the game looks and sounds like the cartoon. The voice actors of the cartoon are the same ones that voiced the game. It is funny and fans of the carton will love the witty humor. The art direction and style is cool, but the story isn’t as deep as that of the cartoon. But that is to be expected. It’s hard for a short video game to reach the depths of the cartoon.
The game has some side quests that you complete in exchange for leveling up your character and acquiring new abilities. The side quests could get repetitive after completing a few of them. You are merely asked to fetch different items.
Pirates of the Enchiridion does a better job of adapting the cartoon than any other Adventure Time game. The game is too simple and easy to play as it also targets a younger audience. The game gets repetitive at a point despite its short length. But these flaws won’t stop you from enjoying the game.
- The cartoon is well depicted
- The game dialogue is interesting
- The game world is beautiful
- The game is quite short
- The game is repetitive
- The game has some bugs
