Aperture Desk Job

While Aperture Desk Job is being offered with the new steam deck in mind, you can still play and enjoy this short free to play experience on your PC. It is brought to us by the creative minds at valve and it is something that you can actually get through in around 30 minutes or so. Yet, this game has a fantastic reputation online and the reaction to it has been insanely positive today I am going to share with you my thoughts on this very quirky title.

First Day On The Job

The idea of the Aperture Desk Job is that you have just gotten a job at Aperture Science and your “job” is that you need to test out toilets. This game is actually set in the same universe as Portal so things are clearly not going to go as planned. Things start to get a bit haywire and your little robot companion, Grady (who is just like Wheatly) causes all kinds of trouble. There is even a cameo from Cave Johnson! If you love the Portal series and Valve in general, this is 100 percent pure Valve.

Testing Out The Features

As far as the gameplay of Aperture Desk Job goes, the idea here is that it is there to teach people to get to grips with their new Steam Deck console. It teaches them the basics of the controls of the device in a fun way. Now, you can also play this on your PC, but you will need a controller and you will have to skip the things that are to due with the gyro controls that the Steam Deck has, but you can still play all the way to the end, which I highly recommend that you do as it is freaking hilarious. It has that “Portal” wit and charm about it and I was smiling the whole time I was playing the game.

Looking Through The Portal

Aperture Desk Job as I said before is set in the same world as the Portal series. This is very evident from the way that the game looks, feels, and sounds. It is a very short game, 30 minutes to get through it, but it makes you fall in love with Valve all over again and wish that they would make more games! Seriously, Valve makes amazing narrative driven games, they really are one of the best in the world at doing this yet they hardly ever seem to do it!

I have played through Aperture Desk Job twice now and if Santa Claus sees what a good boy, I have been this year and brings me a nice and shiny Steam Deck, you bet your ass I will play through it on there too. This is just typical Valve/Portal humor and it is something that I get a massive kick out of. It is completely free to play and it takes up just a few GB on your computer and it takes up way less than an hour of your precious time. If you love the Portal series, this is honestly a must play experience.

Pros:

  • It is set in the same universe as the Portal series
  • It would be a great way to have some fun with your new Steam Deck
  • The nods to Portal and the humor in general, are just fantastic
  • This is free to play and only takes around 30 minutes to complete

Cons:

  • You cannot play this with your keyboard and mouse, you have to use a controller
  • It makes you kind of mad that Valve does not make more games than they do!
