Asterigos

I am pretty excited to talk to you guys about Asterigos, which I was recently turned onto by a buddy of mine. It is made by an independent studio from Taiwan called, Acme Gamestudio and as soon as I saw the trailer, I knew that this was a game that I had to take a closer look at. As I write this, the game is not yet complete, but they are hopeful of a release by late spring for PlayStation 4 and PC, with an enhanced PlayStation 5 version due out towards the end of the year.

Lifting A Curse And Saving Your Dad

Asterigos is a fantasy style of story and one that I am very excited to get stuck into. We play as a young warrior called Hilda who has traveled from the North to the mysterious city of Aphes which is under a curse that has led to all kinds of monstrous creatures roaming the place. Now, you may think that lifting the curse is what the story is all about, but you are actually there to find your dad who has gone missing. With a kind of ancient Greece and Rome thing going on, I am very intrigued to see just how story-driven this is going to be.

The City Of Aphes

I think that the city of Aphes itself if going to be one of the main things that gets people excited about with Asterigos. It has many different areas ranging from dank sewers to areas full of life and greenery. As well as the actual city being full of diverse locations, they have promised a solid variety of enemy types too from these little grunt looking creatures to horrifying werewolves, I am very impressed with the creature designs in this game. There are also some very cool imaginative bosses in the game as well. I think exploring this city and learning more about it, what happened and so on is going to be very interesting.

Being Your Own Warrior

As far as the gameplay of Asterigos goes, we know that this is going to be a fantasy action-RPG style of game and I am more than ok with that. With a strong premise as far as the story goes and a what seems like a well thought out mythology, I think there is a lot for us to sink our teeth into here. However, it is the combat that has gotten me really excited. There are six different weapon types in the game and they will all give you a different way to play the game. One of the weapons is called the Dual Blades and these are made for those that want to be close and attack fast. On the other end of the spectrum, we have the Magic Staff which allows for magical ranged attacks. They have not revealed much about the character progression in the game such as learning new skills and so on, but they have said character progression is tied to the weapon type you select.

Man, it is such a shame that Asterigos is not getting more attention. I really think that this has all the makings of something that could be really cool and special. From the very interesting story and characters to that fantastic cursed city, we get to explore. Also, the combat that they are talking about here sounds like it is going to be fun and also have a layer of complexity to it that takes it above just being a button masher. If you like action-RPGs be sure to give this one some attention!

Pros:

  • I like the story that they are telling here
  • This cursed city has a lot of diversity to it
  • There are some very cool creature designs in this game
  • There is going to be an enhanced PS5 version coming later in the year

Cons:

  • There is no Xbox or Nintendo Switcher version of the game planned
  • I do worry that this game is going to struggle to find its audience
