Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster by Capcom reinvigorates the acclaimed franchise of zombie-slaying and puts players in a position to once again visit Willamette, Colorado, now with renewed graphics and improved play. This remastered version of the 2006 cult classic doesn't just hone in on refining the original but is an overall rework of the game's visuals with quality-of-life improvements that really make the zombie apocalypse more approachable than ever.

A Mall Crawl Like No Other

Once again, the player takes on the role of Frank West, a freelance photojournalist who always seems to find himself in the most precarious situations. With the military quarantining Willamette, Frank sets out to take the story of his life—the problem being that it drops him squarely in the middle of a living nightmare at the local shopping mall. Lacking any information and with 72 hours before the cavalry arrives, players are forced to discover the truth behind the outbreak while battling countless hordes of the undead and dealing with dangerous psychopaths.

First and foremost, the presentation of its mall environment is top-notch. With the RE ENGINE, the game received a huge graphical facelift. The zombies are more fleshed out and grotesque, while the environmental textures appear with newfound clarity. Frank's facial expressions are also more expressive than ever. It doesn't make the game prettier but enhances the atmosphere all around—making the dire situation feel more palpable and immersive.

Smoother Slaying, Deeper Storytelling

Probably one of the most jarring improvements to this remaster has to do with its renewed game experience. Yes, the original Dead Rising did have some pretty clunky controls. However, the Deluxe Remaster addresses these issues directly. Controls are now more responsive, and it becomes easier than ever to get through the horde of zombies or smash the undead with a slew of weapons available at one's beck and call.

One of the major changes is the addition of auto-save functionality, which makes the game much more forgiving than its originally rather harsh save system. Even better, there are UI improvements in store for inventory management and mission tracking. Quality-of-life enhancements like this have allowed players to actually focus on the action instead of wrestling with dated mechanics.

Probably the most significant upgrade of all would be the full voice acting. While it held voiced cutscenes in the original title, many interactions were text-based. Now, with the Deluxe Remaster, all characters come fleshed out with voice acting, adding further depth to the telling and making the mall survivors more real and relatable.

Compared with other zombie games in general, this remaster does hold its own right. Certainly, State of Decay 2 is the more open-world survival game, but Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster knows where it really shines: with a much more focused, time-limited narrative and scenes of pure chaos in its combat. Few other games provide an experience that features a mall setting with a ticking clock, blending horror with black humor.

Review: 8.5/10

Dead Rising Remaster Deluxe proves sometimes you can teach an old zombie new tricks. This is something of a contract to the appeal that first went endless, now put in a package where both longtime fans and newcomers can sink their teeth into it.
