Main Game Features
- 3 classic arcade games in 1 package
- Original and new soundtrack
- Awesome beat em up fighting gameplay
Double Dragon Trilogy contains the first three arcade games in the series, including Double Dragon, Double Dragon II: The Revenge, and Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone. Each game has its own short but action-pushing plot, featuring the mega-badass brawler Billy Lee. In the first game, Billy must force his way through the neighborhood of the deadly Black Warrior gang after they kidnap his girlfriend. To do so, he'll have to defeat several leaders within the gang, all of who are prepared to defeat Billy or die trying.
Perhaps the writers were lazy with the sequel, because in the second game, Billy is once again pitted against the Black Warrior gang. This time, instead of kidnapping his girlfriend, they simply kill her. The third game takes a strange turn as the story involves Billy following the advice of a mysterious fortune teller. In order to defeat the world's strongest fighter, Billy is sent to locate a trio of Rosetta Stones hidden around the globe.
While other fighting games like Street Fighter II and beat em ups like Streets of Rage have complex moves, Double Dragon Trilogy's biggest benefactor is its simplicity. Especially in the first game, Billy can only jump, punch, and kick, but other moves are learned later on. Unlike the original arcade games though, you can use all of the special moves between games, increasing Billy's list of techniques. Moving forward and beating up every enemy in your path is the core gameplay concept across all three games, but it's hard not to enjoy the mayhem.
Items can also be collected during your travels, which help out by restoring health, increasing your power, and more. In the second game, you can even purchase items from shops found within levels, although you'll need extra credits to do so. Also, the game doesn't seem to include cooperative play. Even though these problems exist, Double Dragon Trilogy balances them out with bonus features. Besides the freestyle combat system, you can also toggle between classic and remixed music, as well as two difficulty options.
It doesn't matter if you're someone who emptied your pockets full of quarters at the arcades back in the day or are just interested in some simple action gaming, Double Dragon Trilogy is a good time. It would be better if two player co-op was included, but the games are still fun as a solo affair.
If mashing buttons and saving damsels sounds fun to you, there's a good chance Double Dragon Trilogy will be entertaining.
