Developed by Circle Meimitei and published by Kagura Games, Dungeon Town is a JRPG, indie, adventure game that has not been given an official release date yet. The story revolves around a famous explorer who sets out to explore a place called Famos Village. Dungeon Town was announced as a Windows exclusive title.
From Zeno to Hero
The game revolves around Zeno, an adventurer known for his prowess and accomplishments in ruin explorations. As he sets out to explore an unknown place called Famos Village, which was the place where a mysterious abyss opened up, unleashing demons upon the world. During his explorations Zeno loses all his memories, and experiences which basically make him an amateur explorer all over again.
Our hero, now turned amateur armed with nothing but his instincts, sets out to learn what has occurred, and what else awaits him in Famos Village. The village is a dungeon crawler that involves various quests, a massive ensemble of characters and constant battles. Elements of JRPG are most prominent through its the game’s shops and material, as well as the turn-based combat.
How The West Was Won
Dungeon Town is actually a 2016 release that is being adapted to the western market. This once popular dungeon crawler is about to receive Chinese and English adaptations in the near future. From the trailers alone we can see that the game is a 2D platformer, with pixelated graphics that give it an arcade, and old-school vibe to it. In some manners it should remind players of the Pokemon series, especially regarding exploration and the combat.
Combat is especially reminiscent of the Pokemon games, the UI informing players of health points, spell usage, attacks to be used, and status effects of both players. The role-playing aspects are specially focused on exploration, turn-based strategy, and loadouts available for exploration. Players also gain experience through combat, allowing them to level up, and progressively get stronger through the game, bringing Zeno closer to his former glory.
Finally, exploration, while semi-guided by a map, is always a new adventure since the game has randomly generated dungeons. The random nature of the dungeons is a roguelike mechanic that functions perfectly in providing a constant challenge, and a fresh experience for Dungeon Town.
The available information is very scarce at the moment. There is one gameplay trailer available, that doesn’t really deliver a lot of information surrounding the release.
However, what can be said is that this game was a success in the dungeon crawler genre in the Japanese gaming market in 2016. We can also get a clear glimpse of the gameplay style, and visuals of Dungeon Town, which are purposefully simple and easy to navigate.
Finally, we can look at both the developer and publisher's strong history in the industry and expect a polished adaptation of a great game. Fans of successful dungeon crawlers such as Darkest Dungeon, The Binding of Isaac, Enter the Gungeon, and the recently released Death’s Door should give this a try.
