Fire Hawk by Camerica is a wild and wooly whirlybird shoot-'em-up. This is one of the best helicopter combat carts currently cruising the NES skies.
Just for the Laffs
The airborne war against drugs has flown into the country of Lafia. You must fly seven Missions to pick up commandos who are gathering key intelligence data.
The game features two cool perspectives. For the most part, you fly and fight via an overhead view. When you make a pickup, the action shifts to a behind-the-copter view, where you must blast druggie copters flying in from the sides of the screen. Miss and they get a free shot that always scores.
Fire Hawk is a monster thumb-burner. You fight with a generous, but limited, supply of ammo and bombs. In each Mission, you recover commandos scattered across ever-growing island strongholds. The drug forces lay down a murderous cloud of fire. Just four hits fry your shields. At least, blasting enemy vehicles, buildings, and gun emplacements releases power-ups for ammo, bombs, shield repair, and broader shot patterns.
The game play is definitely tricky. The turning controls are very sensitive, which helps when moving quickly. Being able to fly backwards, as well as you can fly forwards, is a big plus.
The graphics and sound are top-notch. The overhead view pix are good-looking and sharp. Tiny tanks, and even tinier commandos, are very easy to see. The sound doesn't mess around with cheesy music, devoting all its energy to aggro game effects.
ProTip: If the shields are low and you have paratroopers onboard, return to the ship.
This Hawk's on Fire
Even if you don't like combat chop per carts, you might like this one. It's suitable for all ranges of flight experience, but only the pros are likely to reach Mission 7. Don't do drugs, do Fire Hawk.
- During the pickup sequences, team to hit enemy choppers with one button press.
- To make relatively safe landings, dear out enemy anti-aircraft batteries around your paratroopers before you pick them up. But watch your fuel gauge.

Camerica's new cart for the NES is Fire Hawk. In this intense combat shooter, you will be needed to rescue some of your country's top agents who are trapped behind enemy lines.
Blast your way through many levels of enemy artillery in order to reach your men. You must keep your eyes peeled for power-ups while avoiding heavy ground-to-air bombardments and agile enemy jets.
Once you find your man, and your landing brackets are activated, your perspective on the battle will change from overhead scrolling to a rearview shooting mode.
While waiting for your agent to climb the helicopter's ladder, shoot down approaching enemy choppers.
Fire Hawk should be landing in stores sometime in May. Prepare for battle, as your mission awaits.
