Jurassic Park: The Game

Ever since a young Mr Goldblum graced the screen, the Jurrasic Park franchise has remained a popular fixture within cinema culture. The original movies were a roaring success and even the more recent Jurassic World earned some plaudits too. So, with that in mind, it only seems fitting that the video game industry try and bring this wonderful IP to live, Jurassic Park: The Game is complete with velociraptors aplenty and other scaly gargantuan killers.

This game plays like just about any other game within the series of Telltale games. However, thanks to the dino angle, this game plays very similarly to games like Dino Crisis, Turok, Path of Titans and Jurrasic World: Evolution. This game aims to tell a new story in the Jurrasic Park series that is up to the standard of the wonderful movies. However, were they too busy asking if they could that they forgot to ask themselves if they should? We find out in our review of Jurrasic Park: The Game.

A Dino Disappointment

This game does uses the typical Telltale format, taking a large franchise and producing a four-part episodic series which tells a new story within the universe. This has worked well with past outings with emphasis on The Walking Dead series. However, on this occasion we have to say, it hasn’t had the same level of success. These games live and die by their ability to form new stories and create new and interesting characters. However, sadly this game fails to captivate its audience. The story picks up somewhere between the original movie and the second, where you will follow the story of many different mercenaries, scientists and researchers as they explore the intriguing world of Jurassic Park. However, the issue with this is that you don’t control one set character. The game rather decides to go with an Until Dawn sort of storytelling method, where your choices dictate who you will control. However, it leads to a lack of cohesion and an inability to establish characters who fans can care for.

Then with regards to the gameplay, this is probably the most competent aspect of this title. The game uses the standard Telltale format, the branching paths and the usual UI to drive the story. The camera angle and laboured clue checking functions are a little disappointing but as a whole, the presentation and the functionality of the game itself is definitely the strongest aspects of the game. Which is a little disappointing in and of itself.

The Verdict

Overall, Jurassic Park: The Game is a Telltale game which sticks to the formula but fails to deliver a great final product. The story is mediocre at best, losing a lot of its appeal due to the writer’s inability to flesh out their characters. The gameplay is also a little unfocused as the player doesn’t have control of who they play as and the UI is a little bit askew in parts.

5.5

If you like the series as a whole, this is a serviceable game that has its moments. However, if you expect the profound gaming moments that can be found in The Walking Dead Telltale game for example, you’ll be a little disappointed.

Pros:

  • Follows the typical Telltale format
  • A unique Jurassic Park story
  • Visually, the game is pretty good

Cons:

  • The story is rather underwhelming
  • Characters aren’t fleshed out enough
  • UI functionality is a little askew in areas
