An excellent combination between dungeon crawling and action RPG, Last Epoch delivers tons of great content for fans of loot-based adventures. Featuring a rich selection of classes and an even more impressive variety of skills, this dungeon crawler has all the right elements to become a genre classic.
Developed by Eleventh Hour Games and released in 2019, Last Epoch has been getting a healthy amount of new content with the years, turning it into a continuously evolving experience that never gets stale. If you know what you’re getting into, Last Epoch could be either your favorite game, or it could overburden you with its infinite loots and deep mechanics.
At its core, Last Epoch is a dungeon crawler RPG that looks and plays similarly to other genre classics like Diablo II and Path of Exile. However, the main gameplay and some UI elements are where the similarities between these games end.
You play as a hero that explores the treacherous lands of Eterra, a magical fantasy land. However, this adventure will take you far beyond time and space, as time travel is one of the main gameplay mechanics of Last Epoch.
Throughout your journey, there will be moments when you’ll need to travel through time to different epochs to explore Eterra. Each epoch features different creatures, loot, and visuals, making the game feel even more varied than it already is. Eterra is a massive land, made even bigger when you consider the different time periods you’ll have to endure.
Heroes and skills
Players begin the game as a base class with balanced stats. However, much like Path of Exile, they’ll soon be able to choose a mastery class to cater to their playstyles. All in all, Last Epoch features 15 mastery classes, each focused on a different approach to combat and gameplay.
Along with the mastery classes, players will have access to over a hundred skill trees, as each skill in the game has a development path. This allows an even more impressive degree of character customization, one that will let players create whatever character they can think of, no matter how overpowered it might sound.
However, to avoid the game feeling like a walk in the park, Last Epoch uses long cooldowns on each of your skills. While this certainly helps to prevent the player from easily beating the game, it can also be quite frustrating. The long cooldowns and slow animations can make the game feel a bit sluggish, especially when compared to other ARPGs.
Map exploration is also quite rewarding in Last Epoch. Not only does every location you visit feel unique and lively, but the game’s captivating story also helps in keeping things interesting throughout the campaign’s duration.
A lonely adventure
As it is now, Last Epoch is a single-player-only experience. That means that you’ll be unable to explore Eterra together with your friends for the time being. Developers Eleventh Hour Games have planned for the game to become multiplayer once it leaves the Early Access stage, but that mode and its implementation remains to be seen.
It’s also worth mentioning that, despite being a single-player game, Last Epoch requires players to create an account to play the game. While this might not be an issue for most, some players might find this extra step somewhat tedious.
Last Epoch is a promising ARPG with tons of content and immensely satisfying gameplay. While some of its online components and overall gameplay speed still need some work, the game is a solid experience for fans of the genre.
