My Friendly Neighborhood

My Friendly Neighborhood took me by surprise, I remember seeing the first trailer for this about a year ago and thought it looked awesome. However, with so much stuff coming out and being announced, I forgot about it until recently! I went to the games page and was delighted to see that there was a demo for it! Low key, this is one of my surprise hits of the year and while I can see it not being everyone’s cup of tea, I think this is a fun horror first person game.

The Hit Kids TV Show!

The idea of the story that the game is telling is that many years ago there was a hit kids TV show called, My Friendly Neighborhood. It is pretty much Sesame Street. A fun education show with puppets as the characters that teach children stuff as well as do fun skits and so on. Well, the show started to lose popularity so it was eventually canceled and the TV network just shut it all down and left all the sets and puppets to pretty much rot. Most people forgot about the show…. until now!

A Strange Broadcast

You see, My Friendly Neighborhood randomly airs for a short time and it is like a bit of a horror show. Still, it is so brief that people are not really sure of what they saw. This leads us to our main character and the person we play as, Gordon. Gordon is a handyman and he has been sent to shut down what is thought to be a faulty transmitter that is broadcasting older episodes. Once he arrives, Gordon realizes that the puppets have come to life and they are crazy and want him dead! I know that there are parallels with the likes of Five Nights at Freddy’s and Bendy and the Ink Machine here, but I still like the story that is being told.

The Puppet Apocalypse

My Friendly Neighborhood is played from the first-person, but it is not a first-person shooter. There is plenty of action here with you having to use the items you find in the studio to put down the puppets, you literarily use your “ABCs” in some instances for example. However, there is a lot of exploration and a fair bit of puzzle solving here too, I would say that it reminds me way more of Bendy and the Ink Machine than it does Five Nights at Freddy’s and that is not meant as a complaint. The only issue I did have was sometimes I was not exactly sure where I needed to go, but to be fair, the game does want you to explore so perhaps I was just being a dumb ass?

Puppets, Puppets Are Everywhere!

The visuals of My Friendly Neighborhood are fantastic. Seeing these creepy ass puppets coming at you can be pretty alarming and the game certainly got me with a couple of jump scares here and there. It looks great, I just loved exploring this old studio and finding out various things about the lore and little bits of information about the show as a whole. The game is also supported by some great voice acting which really does a great job of getting you more invested in the story.

I could not be any more in with My Friendly Neighborhood! This game is just so much fun and I do think that Bendy and the Ink Machine is the best comparison for the game in terms of its tone and the way that it plays. I can see some people just not clicking with this and I do get that. However, I had a blast with the demo and I am very excited to play all the way through the full game when I eventually get the chance to do so.

Pros:

  • I love the idea of murderous puppets
  • There is more depth to the story than you would think
  • There are some fun and clever weapons to use
  • This is a fun horror game and one that I can see being a cult hit

Cons:

  • I am not sure how much replay value there will be for a game like this
  • Some may find the idea of killer puppets just too weird!
