I freaking love what they are trying to do with Next Space Rebels! This game reminds me of this movie I saw as a kid (the name escapes me) about these kids who built a rocket and ended up going into space. That is the kind of thing we are working with here, but there is a lot of tongue in cheek stuff going on here with some fantastic FMV that you really do not see in many games these days.
Being The Star Of StarTube
The concept of what is going on here with Next Space Rebels is that you are trying to show the world just how skilled you are at making rocket ships. Getting up as high as you can into space is awesome, but there is more at stake here in this game. You see, in this world the most popular video platform is called StarTube and you want to get as many viewers as you can by showcasing your rocket building skills.
Building And Soaring!
You may think that being able to build a rocket ship in Next Space Rebels is going to require you to be a rocket scientist yourself, but the tools they give you are very simple to use. If you can imagine it and if you have the right parts then you can build it! I am not saying it will actually fly, but that is a huge part of the fun here trying to figure out what will work and what will work out best for you.
Getting The Best Stuff, Requires Some Work!
If you truly want something you have to work for it is what my dad told me and that kind of logic rings true for Next Space Rebels. You have to complete these various challenges that the game has for you and this not only moves things forward, it also how you will earn new and advanced parts that you can use when building your rocket. It is pretty fun stuff and the thought of getting a new piece is what will drive you to keep on playing and moving through the challenges.
Putting The Fun In FMV
I have to take a moment to talk about the FMV that this game has which is hilarious. Not enough games use stuff like this these days and seeing these zany characters with their own StarTube channels is a great deal of fun. It has a bit of a reality TV show and MythBusters thig going on with the way that they present it all and I love it. I get that FMV is not going to be something everyone likes, but I think it is a lot of fun.
If the idea of building your own rocket and becoming a YouTube… sorry, StarTube star sounds like the kind of thing you would have a lot of fun with then I highly recommend that you take a closer look at Next Space Rebels.
I know that this is the kind of game that sounds very complicated, but it is very good at easing you into things. It does also have a free play mode that is great for screwing around and learning the basics of the game. There is a demo available for this game and as it is so weird, I would suggest you check out the demo to see if this is for you.
- The whole FMV aspect of the game is very well done
- I love the humor in the game
- Building rockets is fun and very satisfying when you get it to work
- I liked messing around in the free play mode
- I think this is the kind of game you will either love or just not get
- I do think those FMV’s may get a bit old
