Pine Harbor

In this chilling new horror game, players are visiting Pine Harbor, a beautiful fishing town changed by a technological disaster. The game opens with the directive to help the citizens of Pine Harbor, but there’s little more to go on than that. After this, players are dropped into the game with almost nothing in the way of a tutorial and must figure it out from there.

Atmospheric, great graphics

The game does a great job of being horrifying right from the start. The first directive is to find your way out of a mineshaft to the surface. The atmosphere of the area is astounding. Water drips off of concrete walls, the colors are moody and grey, and the building the player is trapped in is dark and confusing.

Exploring the compound reveals that Pine Harbor isn’t home to just humans. The technological disaster as caused some people to turn into grotesque monsters, who will stop at nothing to kill the player. There’s very little in the way of ammunition and supplies, so characters need to stay sharp and not waste ammo.

Strong Resident Evil Vibes

If you’re a fan of Resident Evil, you will likely enjoy Pine Harbor. The game definitely has similar vibes, with the feeling of being one of the few humans left in a vast world of monsters. The game keeps up similarities with the color palette, sounds, and basic story as well.

Right now, there’s not too much of the story released yet, but what has been shown in the demonstration and early playthrough is well done.

Very Challenging Gameplay

This is a survival horror game, and it takes that genre seriously. There are very few resources available, lots of monsters, and very few places to run. Players can avoid monsters by sprinting, or avoid detection by crouch walking, but it’s easy to run into another group of monsters and get surrounded.

Some players on the early demonstration forum complain that the game is a little too hard. The key bindings can’t be changed yet, and the key bindings available aren’t intuitive.

While this may change on the full version of the game, a few players did not feel encouraged to buy it due to the difficulty of the game.

If you’re not sure whether this game is right for you, the demo is free and worth playing. The initial mission the demo gives you is more than enough to let you know if the game is one you’ll find deliciously horrible, or too frustrating to play.

If you’re a fan of horror games, downloading Pine Harbor’s demo will let you know whether the game is a good fit for your collection or not. The game is a good mix of horror, story, and atmospheric gameplay. If you find the resources too skimpy, or the gameplay too challenging, the demo will tell you that right away.

If you download it and like the challenge, this game is an ideal choice. If not, you haven’t lost any money by trying the demonstration.

Pros:

  • Stunning, detailed graphics
  • Very atmospheric

Cons:

  • Key bindings are not adjustable
  • Gameplay too challenging for some
