Pokemon Gaia

Pokémon Gaia is one of the most famous Pokémon hacks around. It is a hack that felt like it was being worked on forever and I would go back and play it some more whenever something new was added to it. In case you did not know, Pokémon Fire Red is the game that this hack is based on. If you enjoy Pokémon games, you are in for a great time with this one.

A Different Kind Of Start

One area that more than a few Pokémon hacks have fallen short in is the story. I am glad that with this game here they have not tried to be to “grand”. Instead what we get with Pokémon Gaia is a damn fine Pokémon story that could very well be something that you would get in an actual game.

Instead of being a kid who wants to be the very best trainer around. The game starts you off as a research assistant. This is a different take and while there is still the big bad evil you have to overcome, the gyms to battle in and so on. I feel that the story is done well enough that it will keep you interested.

Hey, Who Are You?

One of the coolest things about these Pokémon hacks is when they put Pokémon from later generations into them. That is the case here and I think that it is awesome. However, some of the Pokémon that have been added to the game have a slightly different look to them. It is not bad or anything like that, but it is certainly noticeable.

The region that was created for this game, Orbtus is great and each of the eight gyms has its own personality that I liked as well. The sound in the game had a bit of a high pitch for me, but this to be fair could have been just me.

Getting To The End

I ended up putting 26 hours into the game. I did this over the course of a few days as I found myself that hooked. Pokémon Gaia is not trying to be too clever or reinvent the wheel. Instead what this hack is doing is giving you a slightly more challenging Pokémon experience than you get with the standard games.

The Pokémon can have new and extra moves and the layout can be drastically different when you are exploring. However, there is a real familiarity with all of this and I do not mean that negatively at all.

I really enjoyed my time with this game. It is so easy to look at this and say that they have not really done anything radically new here with the Pokémon formula. I for one am glad of that. You see what we have here with Pokémon Gaia is a damn fine Pokémon game and one of the better hacks around. If you already enjoyed Fire Red and want something similar to that, you have to check this game out.

Pros:

  • I loved the lineup of Pokémon in this game
  • I found the story to be very well done
  • It is the kind of game that is very addictive
  • Great if you already enjoyed Fire Red
  • The start of the game is awesome

Cons:

  • The music was a tad high pitched for me
  • Some of the newly added Pokémon have a slightly different look to them

Game Reviews

Most fan-made hacks limit themselves to "reshaping" an already-existing video game to fit the vision of its creators. And then there's Pokemon Gaia, a mod that aims to bring some of the most essential modern updates to the Pokemon formula and inject them into one of the most beloved entries in the saga.

Based on Pokemon FireRed, Pokemon Gaia introduces mechanics, locations, and even Pokemon from up to Gen 6. That means that Mega Evolutions, a revamped EXP system, and some other aspects that should appeal to competitive players are all here while keeping the nostalgic look of Pokemon FireRed intact.

Gameplay Galore

Pokemon Gaia takes everything you love about the classic Pokemon RPGs and cranks things up a notch with tons of fresh features that breathe new life into battles and exploration. Mega Evolution finally arrives, letting your favorite Pokemon transform into even mightier forms mid-battle just like in Pokemon X and Y.

You'll also find updated move sets just like in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, along with competitive items and abilities designed with the most ardent battlers in mind. And Generation 4 fans will rejoice now that the long-awaited physical/special split is here, bringing balance to the battlefield.

Immaculate Visuals

Pokemon Gaia dazzles you with stunningly redesigned sprites and environments sure to take your breath away. Both Pokemon and trainers have been lovingly reimagined in gorgeous, handcrafted detail that'll make every battle a sight to behold. Sure, most of the sprite work comes from FireRed, but the visuals remain as sharp as you remember them.

each location you explore feels unique, lovingly crafted, and absolutely memorable – from the rocky peaks and cliffs of the Totem Pole terrain to the sun-soaked beaches and lazy waves of Celanto Town. Pokemon Gaia sucks you into its beautifully realized world from the very first step, eager to sweep you off your feet with its magical creative vision brought to vibrant life.

Journey into Orbtus

Pokemon Gaia weaves a captivating tale that takes you on a breathtaking journey through the enchanting Orbtus region. Once home to a shining civilization that built majestic monuments to their gods, Orbtus fell to ruin when a series of cataclysmic earthquakes shook the land to its foundations.

Now, centuries later, ominous signs suggest disaster is brewing once more – and it's up to you, with the guidance of Professor Redwood and the friendly rivalry of your childhood friend, to save Orbtus from calamity.

Pokemon fans will surely know how rare it is for one of the mainline games to tackle serious subjects in their plots. Fortunately, Pokemon Gaia took a page out of the Pokemon Black and White manual to deliver an emotional story that manages to be both thrilling and captivating.
