Pokémon has had quite the year. First of all Pokémon Go lasted way longer than many of us thought it would, Pokémon Let’s Go on the Nintendo Switch is the first home console Pokémon game in years and in between all this we have had Pokémon Quest come to Android. The first thing that you notice about Pokémon Quest is the way that the game looks. This is no normal Pokémon game! The whole thing has been given a blocky art style and as a result, it looks like a cross between Minecraft and Crossy Road. Pokémon have had their looks changed in a few games before, but this new blocky style is both cute and fun. It is certainly an interesting way for you to see some of your favorite Pokémon.
While the art style is really neat the gameplay is rather interesting too. There are a few different aspects to Pokémon Quest and you will have to learn how to do them all so you stand the best chance possible of actually catching them all. The way you progress through the game is by first of all cooking some food, you then need to use this food to lure in and catch Pokémon. You then can equip your Pokémon to your party and head out into the world where you can explore locations, fight other Pokémon learn abilities and become stronger. Training you Pokémon is one of the most important parts of Pokémon Quest. If you do not train them properly then there is no way at all that they are going to last very long, especially as you progress further into the game and come across some of the harder Pokémon that you are going to have to battle.
The crafting of food and having to lure in Pokémon is quite interesting and certainly adds a little bit of Minecraft to the game. The exploration aspect of the game feels like it is right out of a classic Pokémon game and as for the combat, well the combat has been heavily simplified and is actually the easiest aspect of the game. You select the abilities that your Pokémon can do, but then they just happily attack on their own. You can simplify it even more by turning on the “Auto Mode” with this turned on, you do not even have to worry about selecting the abilities the Pokémon will use in battle as they will happen all on their own.
Pokémon Quest is a free to play game, but as you would expect there are many Microtransactions in this game ranging from making things easier for you to getting exclusive Pokémon that you cannot get otherwise. There is a grind in Pokémon Quest, but you can still experience most of what the game has to offer without spending any money and if you are looking to just explore the game as an adventure and not bothered about collecting them all then you can do this without spending any money at all. If you like Pokémon, you will like Pokémon Quest. The way it mixes crafting with collecting is very addictive and while the combat is on the simple side it can still be very addictive.
