POSTAL: Brain Damaged

Ugh was what I said when I heard that POSTAL: Brain Damaged was going to be a thing. I still remember all the craze around second part of series when it was released many years ago. However, rather than just trying to make a shocking and offensive game for the sake of doing so, it actually looks like they are trying to make a fun first-person shooter this time around. I have messed around with the demo a bit and it seems promising in an old school kind of way so I thought I would share my thoughts on it.

Going Postal In The Nut House

The plot of POSTAL: Brain Damaged is pretty crazy, but also kind of fun. We once again play as the Postal Dude and he has found himself locked up in a nuthouse which to be fair is not all that surprising now is it? Well, there are these weird meds that are getting dished out and these are turning people into monsters! You have to fight your way out of there, but the real world outside is not much better! Is this really happening or do you have brain damage?

Level After Level

Postal 2 was a sandbox style of game and that is what the series became known for. With POSTAL: Brain Damaged, things are going for a much more streamlined approach. This is a level based first-person shooter where you fight it out on one level, complete it, and then move on to the next. It is much more linear in its stage design and it is just all about blasting away creepy, gross, and funny looking enemies. It has a kind of Doom, Duke Nukem], and even Serious Sam style to the gameplay and it is not half bad at all if I am being honest.

Cover Your Freaking Ears

Of course, POSTAL: Brain Damaged would not have Postal in the title if it did not have a bunch of gross out and offensive humor now, would it? The game has a very wicked sense of humor and you are sure to get a chuckle here and there. Whereas the series in the past has tried way too hard to be edgy and offensive where it came across as forced. I think with this game they are playing into that and having some real fun with it.

Almost Unreal

I think that visually, POSTAL: Brain Damaged has a pretty interesting style. We are never sure if all this stuff is actually going down or if the Postal Dude has just snapped and is now hallucinating all of this crazy stuff. The visuals do remind me more of Serious Sam than anything else and they have a “classic” charm about them, it looks like a game that could have been around in the early 00s, perhaps even on the Xbox 360.

I have to say that when I heard a new Postal game was coming out, I could not have been any less interested. However, the more I looked into POSTAL: Brain Damaged, the more fun it looked and the free demo that is currently available on Steam right now is not bad at all. It is not the deepest first-person shooter I have played (even with the RPG like elements sprinkled on the game) however, it is fun, and if you are looking for a wacky, weird, and offensive game to have some laughs with, this could be worth checking out.

Pros:

  • I think this is the right direction for the series to take
  • The linear level-based gameplay fits the story and series well
  • It still has lots of gross out and offensive things for you to do
  • I do like the premise of not knowing for sure if this stuff is really happening

Cons:

  • It is not the deepest first-person shooter experience
  • If you are easily offended, you probably should not play this!
