Rusty Rabbit

Rusty Rabbit is a unique new platformer that will be turning heads this September. In this adventure game, humans have abandoned Earth after an ice-age transformed it into an inhospitable planet. In their place, rabbits have evolved to human-like intelligence. The main character of the game, Stamp, is a middle-aged rabbit who spends his time searching for junk in his trusty mech, “Junkster.” When he discovers a clue to the whereabouts of his missing daughter, he sets off on an adventure to try and find her.

No Ordinary Tale

The story for this game was written by no other than Gen Urobochi, an acclaimed anime screenwriter who has also written popular animes such as Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Psycho-Pass. During the Covid-19 epidemic, Gen Urobochi decided to pass the time by creating a game. He learned how to use Unity, and began developing Rusty Rabbit. As lockdown went on longer than expected, and his experience with coding grew, so did his ambitions for the storyline.

Urobochi has added an amazing level of detail to the storyline, including religious beliefs and a complete history of the rabbit. As an example, the rabbits believe they were the chosen race by God, and that the ancient book, “Peter Rabbit,” is in fact a holy text detailing the life of St. Peter. The game is packed with little details like this, added in as Urobochi waited out Covid-19 lockdowns. By the time restrictions lifted, Urobochi realized he might have something worth selling. NetEase agreed to take it on after remaking it in Unreal Engine, and the rest is history. Nitro Plus is now releasing the game, available September 24th on Steam.

Incredible Graphics

The graphics for Rusty Rabbit are beautiful, especially for a largely platforming game. The backdrops, sprites and animations are all very beautifully done. Even better are the graphics in the cutscenes, which are extremely sharp. Most 2d platformers follow in the footsteps of Super Mario Bros. and tend to have chunkier, more pixelated art. Rusty Rabbit has gone in a completely different direction, showing what platformers are truly capable of.

Original Gaming

Although the game follows the footsteps of a traditional Metroidvania, it has elements of roguelike as well. The game spawns randomly generated roguelike dungeons for optional play. These dungeons can give you the opportunity to boost Stamp’s stats outside of the main, linear gameplay. These optional dungeons are a refreshing change from the regular gameplay and behave in a different way. It’s exciting to see something fresh and new added to an already very original game. Besides these dungeons, the game also offers new areas that become available after Stamp has met new requirements. The world gradually expands as the character becomes more capable of handling them.
