The legendary series of giant (chibi) mechas is back again with SD Gundam Battle Alliance. Embark on an epic journey across the entire Gundam franchise as you try to mend a twisted timeline and set the record straight in this bite-sized action/strategy game.

These robots aren’t just adorable killing machines. SD Gundam Battle Alliance might just be the finest title in this long-running series, as it has finally managed to capture the spectacle of the Gundam series in a solid action RPG package that fans of collecting games will surely love.

Rewrite the Gundam Canon

As is the case with many anime-inspired games, SD Gundam Battle Alliance will have players go through some of the most iconic moments of the legendary Gundam saga. The only problem is, that things might not be the same as die-hard fans remember them.

Strange events known as “breaks” are tearing apart the Gundam canon, rewriting some pivotal moments from the universe’s history. You’ll have to make things right by piloting a team of three SD (an abbreviation of “super deformed”) mobile suits to victory. Veterans of Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs. might feel right at home with the new and improved controls, not to mention the much more polished visuals.

The game features tons of mobile suits from all over Gundam history. From legendary suits like the RX-78-2 to the more exotic ones like the GN-0000. This is a dream come true for many Gundam fans, even if the roster still isn’t as diverse as what we might find in games like Gundam Breaker 3.

One trademark of the series, namely its cute “chibi” presentation, might be a point of contention among fans, however. While some might find these designs adorable, there might be some die-hard Gundam purists who would have preferred we got more traditional mobile suit designs instead, especially considering how rare it is to get a Gundam game on PC.

Powered Up

The SD Gundam series has come a long way in the past few years. Even though the designs might be pocket-sized, this is a fully-featured game that could compete in scope with some of the best Gundam games ever released.

We haven’t even mentioned the new and improved combo gameplay. Combat in SD Gundam Battle Alliance now feels more satisfying than ever thanks to the inclusion of dynamic weathering effects. These mechas might look cute, but they pack a serious punch, and now they have the battle scars to show it.

Players can also team up with up to two other players, each piloting their own mobile suit, to tackle any of the game’s iconic battles. Now that the game has a more marked emphasis on co-op action, it’s great to see that the multiplayer component lives up to the task.

Rating 10/10

With so many mobile suits to see and so many pivotal moments to relive, SD Gundam Battle Alliance might also be a great entry point for new fans that are just getting into the Gundam craze. It’s never too late to get fascinated by the mixture of action and politics that only the Gundam series can deliver, even if they’re a bit smaller here than they usually are in the anime.

SD Gundam Battle Alliance is a masterclass in great mecha gameplay. The character designs might be a bit odd at the beginning, but the epic battles and iconic moments are definitely up to par with the Gundam franchise.

  • Exciting gameplay and satisfying combat mechanics
  • Tons of unlockable mobile suits to discover
  • Iconic scenes from the anime that will surprise both old and new fans

  • The chibi designs might not appeal to die-hard Gundam fans
