Expanding on the idea of the original game Snake isn’t something you’d expect to see. Where can you go from its simple concept of weaving a snake through a square space, narrowly wrapping around itself, just to pick up dots that increase its size? Apparently, the answer is to make the snake into a bus and drop you into a city with an endless number of people that need you to pick them up. These are the core concepts that make up Snakeybus, a Snake-like arcade experience set in several 3D maps to explore. Snakeybus manages to bring in a healthy amount of nostalgia with its gameplay while also providing new ways to play to keep it fresh.
Warp Around the Neighborhood
What does it mean to be a Snakeybus? Its quite literal, actually. You start off as a normal bus, trying to make it through the day by making the rounds throughout the city.
But just because you’re a snake bus doesn’t mean you don’t have responsibilities. To win in this game, the goal is simple: pick up as many passengers as possible without crashing into a building. This isn’t too difficult to avoid, but the real challenge is trying not to run into yourself as each passenger adds one bus to your total length – just like any Snake game. The concept behind this and execution are done well.
There are several maps that you are able to play on and they each have their own quirks and obstacles to weave around. Snakeybus is largely an arcade game, but its also slightly more difficult because you’re not limited to turning left and right. What, you didn’t think Snakeybus wouldn’t fly, did you? Of course it does! Having vertical movement causes you to think carefully about your movements, though it does give you extra choices. Outside of the arcade mode, there is a multiplayer option which is a lot of fun, so long as you have friends interested. Otherwise, the novelty of the actual gameplay won’t last too long but is still a decent amount of fun.
Arrive On Time (Hopefully)
The execution of this game is definitely its best feature. The controls are smooth, and concept plays out exactly how you want it to, and there’s a lot of fun to be had whenever you boot it up. What causes this game to stumble a bit is the simplicity of it all compared to the price. It won’t break the bank being only $10 USD, but a majority of players will be left wanting more after playing it for maybe an hour. A game with like Garry’s Mod, but with a noticeably shorter amount of playtime or replayability is not one that I would wholly recommend at full price.
That being said, this is a title where you’ll have a blast that will honestly be memorable among you and your friends. It just won’t last quite as long as other games manage to.
Snakeybus is a short, but incredibly sweet arcade style Snake spinoff that is sure to be a hilarious gaming session.
Despite its brevity, it is a great example of building a good game with its own unique style out of whacky concept.
