Soul Hackers 2

The long-awaited continuation to one of the most criminally-overlooked JRPGs released in the nineties, Soul Hackers 2 promises to deliver the same intense blend of arcane imagery and digital-era technology that its predecessor is so well-known for. As part of a larger series — one of the most iconic ones in the genre — Soul Hackers 2 will undeniably feature some new tricks learned from Atlus’ recent successes.

Considering the sudden rise in popularity of Atlus’ JRPGs thanks to the smash hit that was Persona 5, it’s not surprising to see the developer bringing back some of its more obscure franchises into the spotlight. Let’s take a look at what Soul Hackers 2 might do with the tried-and-true formula the franchise has used in the past.

Digital Occultism

Like some other entries in the long-running Shin Megami Tensei series, Soul Hackers 2’s story takes place in modern-day Japan, where the demonic forces of darkness and the heavenly warriors of order clash in a secret war.

If you’ve ever played Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner before, you’ll know that a central element of this subseries is how technology could be used as a catalyst for dark forces. Unlike some other entries in the Shin Megami Tensei, your character this time won’t be a normal teenager of some sort, but rather an “Aion:” a supernatural being sent to Earth to avert a cataclysmic event.

Series veterans will be pleased to know that the trademark combat mechanics of the Shin Megami Tensei will be returning in Soul Hackers 2. This means that the simplified combat interface of Persona 5 won’t be anywhere near this game, using the traditional battle system that includes Demon negotiation as an integral mechanic instead.

Battles can either be won by force, or by reaching an accord with your foes. Usually speaking, you’ll need to bargain with a ton of Demons if you hope to make it through the game, as these creatures are your main means of attack in this series.

Social Interactions

There’s no denying that Persona 5 marked a clear before and after for Atlus. While previous Persona games were widely acclaimed by the developer’s fanbase, the success of the latest entry in the series heralded a new era for the Shin Megami Tensei as a whole.

What this means is that Soul Hackers 2 will feature some light social simulation elements, similar to Persona’s Social Links. This will allow your character to strengthen their bonds with the rest of the party, in turn making upcoming battles a bit easier.

These interactions will prove hugely beneficial in the Soul Hackers 2’s “Sabbath” attacks, which allow the whole party to attack every foe, dealing huge amounts of critical damage in the process.

With its focus on socialization and a new creative team behind every design, Soul Hackers 2 could be the beginning of yet another great series in the west for Atlus. It worked with Shin Megami Tensei V, so it seems like this game is also on its way to another modern JRPG classic.
