I know it may seem like it is 20 years too late, but Starship Troopers - Terran Command is a game that I think really does have the potential to be something special. I love the movies, the TV show and I think that the original game we had many years ago (which was also an RTS style of game) had some fun moments too. I do worry about how big the audience is for this franchise in 2022, but I wanted to share my thoughts on it to hopefully get a few more eyes on this and get people excited about this game.

The Only Good Bug Is A Dead Bug!

The story of Starship Troopers - Terran Command follows what we love about the series. It is humans vs arachnids and only one species can reign supreme. The setting for the story is the planet, Kwalasha which is a desert planet that has a hard-working mining colony. Well, there is also a pretty nasty arachnid presence on the planet and that is where the Mobile Infantry comes into play as you lead them to eliminate the arachnid threat so that the people of Kwalasha can live in safety.

A Big Brain Bug!

Remember the scene in the movie where we see the Brain Bug? That was awesome! Anyway, Starship Troopers - Terran Command sees you have to set up your various units and make sure of their special abilities to fight off the arachnid threat. While they are great in numbers, they are also a lot smarter than you would think and they can lay traps, set up ambushes, and cause you some real trouble. I like this as you can get lured into a false sense of security thinking that your firepower and technology can steamroll the bugs, only for them to turn the tables on you.

The Might Of The Mobile Infantry

You have a nice selection of units to make use of in Starship Troopers - Terran Command. The various units, weapons, and special abilities that you have are only as good as your tactics though. You have to try and make clever use of the terrain as well as how to set things up. You on the ground troops with their assault rifles, grenades, and so on will make up the majority of your attack early on. However, as you progress through the game, you get access to more advanced units and weaponry which is a lot of fun.

An Authentic Starship Troopers Experience

You can clearly tell that the people behind Starship Troopers - Terran Command have a lot of love for the series. The music is amazing and while it is all original music, it is clearly inspired by the music from the original 1997 movie and the whole soundtrack actually feels like it could be a score in a movie.

As well as sounding the part, I like the presentation of the game too. It has a kind of zoomed out camera as you would expect from an RTS, but there is still a fair bit of cinematic flair here.

As someone who loves this franchise, Starship Troopers - Terran Command is going to be a day one purchase for me. I love this series and it is just perfect for video games, but it has not had as many as you would think. I liked the original tactics game that was released many years ago and this one looks like it is going to be even better. The game is single-player only and I think that is a bit of a missed opportunity. I say that because being able to play as the bugs would have been a lot of fun.
