Sumire is an indie adventure game about a girl who lives in a picturesque Japanese village and is on a quest to fulfil her deepest wishes. It’s a casual, relaxing game that’s great to play through in the evening to wind down after a long day. If this sounds like something you’re interested in, then be sure to read on, as I’m going to talk a little bit about what the game entails and what makes it so great.
The story of Sumire
A young girl named Sumire encounters an impish spirit one day who promises to fulfil her deepest wishes, but she must complete a series of tasks in return before nightfall. Intrigued by the proposal, Sumire agrees, and the game is all about her journey as she wanders about her village attempting to complete these tasks before the sun goes down.
A single day
The whole of Sumire takes place in one day, starting in the morning and ending in the night, so it's your goal to try and complete every task you can within the single-day limit. The sky changes colour throughout the game, so you'll be able to use that to determine the time of day and how long you have left.
Different quests will appear at different times, too, so be aware that if you skip something earlier in the day, you may not be able to return to it later. If you do skip something though it’s totally okay, as the game is quite replayable, so there’s no harm in playing through it all again to experience what you missed.
Colourful environments and quirky characters
The art style of Sumire is relatively simple yet elegant, with every area looking like a beautiful new watercolour painting. The vivid colours you see throughout are especially nice, helping the game to feel really warm and relaxing. Alongside the environments, all the characters look cute and quirky too. Every forest creature is different, and every human has a unique personality, which is really nice to see. You know the characters are great when you’re always wondering who you’re going to meet next.
Throughout the game, you’ll come across a bunch of hidden challenges and maybe even some rare items too if you’re lucky, so be sure to always have a good look around every environment you pass through and see what you can find. Who knows what kind of hidden goodies you might find tucked away in some bushes or behind a tree?
Though it seemed like a fairly simple game at first, it turns out there’s a whole lot more to do in Sumire than I initially thought. It’s fun, mysterious, and just a really nice game to play overall, so I highly recommend you download Sumire for yourself. There isn’t any game quite like it out there but if you’ve ever played Gris then you may very well like Sumire, as both games follow the story of a young girl sort of lost in her own world.
