When it comes to video games in general, Nintendo is quite possibly the biggest name you could even think of. If you mention video games to anyone in the world, chances are they'll immediately associate it with Nintendo. And vice versa, even though Nintendo has actually been around as a company for over a hundred years. But why are we talking about Nintendo so much? They make one of the most popular fighting game series in the world, that combines all the popular names Nintendo has to offer. Now, we all know that Nintendo is overzealous with their brands and that they shut down entire fan projects that use them without their permission. Today we'll talk about Super Smash Flash, a fan game that was alive and available for a long time, and it's directly based on one of Nintendo's most popular game series.
About the game
Super Smash Flash is exactly what the name implies it is, a fan game created with the same concept as Super Smash titles, but made in Flash. It’s pretty much the same concept as Super Smash Bros. and has all the same basic game mechanics, with the core difference that it uses 2D art and sprites.
It is not a clone of any particular Super Smash Bros game, as it’s completely made from scratch. It has new levels, movesets, different game modes, and a lot more characters than any Smash game available at that time. The movesets are a bit simpler than in the original games, but it still works great.
There are some game modes made with a single player in mind, such as classic and adventure, not to mention all the minigames and challenges too. Of course, the main element in any smash game is the multiplayer factor, so it could not be missing in Super Smash Flash either. You can play against other players or CPUs. However, the multiplayer mode only allows for two players at the same time, unlike the 4 players in the Super Smash Bros. game (Super Smash Bros. Melee) allowed. You can still fill the remaining two slots with CPU-controlled characters if you want to have a multiplayer 4 character match.
A lot of characters
One of the real advantages Super Smash Flash had over Super Smash Bros. Melee is that it had so many characters, 30 to be exact. And a lot of them would later end up appearing in official smash games, such as Sonic from the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise; Cloud, from Final Fantasy; and Meta Knight, from Kirby. And they even went ahead and added two original characters too, because why not? Just like in the original Super Smash Bros. games, you'd have to accomplish some requirements to unlock the whole roast of characters, but once you do you'll find that it is a really complete one. Even though if you were to compare it with all the characters in Super Smash Bros Ultimate, it would look really small.
Super Smash Flash is one of the coolest fan games made inspired by the Super Smash Bros. franchise, and it was available for a surprisingly long time. The character roast was great and the fighting was really intense, overall a lot of fun.
