The Last Hero of Nostalgaia

We live in a golden era of indie video games, and it's been like that for a good while now. Of course, we're not complaining about this at all, many solid games are incredibly enjoyable that we would have not been able to enjoy otherwise. This is especially true when it comes to souls like video games, a genre that was created just a couple of consoles generations ago. But it's not just the souls thing that indie developers exploit, but also the nostalgia factor. And that's where games like The Last Hero of Nostalgia come into play, as you may have probably already guessed by the title. But what is this game all about? Well, let's talk about it!

About the game

Nostalgia, the world of video games, is cursed by a destructive and mysterious force of pixelation. This gridded curse removes fidelity and polygons from everything it touches, eliminating some of the best memories of video games as well.

But it is in the shadow of this dark moment for Nostalgia, that the hero we need and deserve appears to save the day. Although he is afflicted by the curse of pixelation, he will be the only one capable of saving us and our video game memories.

This game bases much of its development and gameplay on the nostalgia of old games, having clear and constant references everywhere. The game's story is a satire of the world of video games, and what better way to present it than in soulslike game? Where, in the purest "souls" style, much of the story is not directly delivered on a silver platter, but we have to get it ourselves.

Not your average soulslike

As we've mentioned earlier, there are dozens of indie titles, maybe even hundreds, that draw inspiration from games like Dark Souls and Bloodborne. And there are thousands of games inspired by retro games. But even though they may be well done, they don't usually feel a whole lot like either of them.

This is one of the best attempts to recreate the gameplay of the Dark Souls series, making it the same. From early in the game we get to see a lot of the inspiration this game takes from dark sous, but obviously it also takes a lot of inspiration from all kinds of old games. And even not-so-old games, as evidently seen in the early game with the keyboard inspired by kingdom hearts.

Review: 9/10

This game was an incredible surprise, we weren't expecting anything nearly this good to come so suddenly and seemingly out of nowhere. But that's easily the best kind of surprise, so yes, we can easily recommend this game with our eyes closed.
