The Sexy Brutale

The Sexy Brutale is one of the most fun murder mystery-style games that I have ever had the pleasure to play. You know that a game is good when your only complaint is that you wished it lasted a lot longer. I got so invested in this game that I was just dying for a few of my friends to play it so I had someone to discuss it with. This is a real puzzler of a game as you try and figure out what is going on.

All We Have Is Time

The game has us playing as a man called, Lafcadio Boone who has awoken in this very strange, creepy, and Tim Burton style mansion that is also a casino. It is a real hot spot and at the start of The Sexy Brutale, you are told that each year the owner throws a masked ball for people.

This year, something has gone wrong as murder is afoot! To make things worse, Boone is trapped in a time loop, reliving the same day over and over again and he has to solve all of the murders so he can hopefully end the loop and figure out what is going on. The story has a real sense of humor about itself and I loved it!

The Scene Of The Crime

The Sexy Brutale has 10 murders for you to solve, but the interesting thing is the way that you solve them. You do just have to bust the killer (or killers?) instead you have to use your detective skills. You need to spy on the people from afar and find out more about them, the room they are in, and so on before you can solve the case. It is rather challenging stuff and this is where the puzzle aspect comes into play. Each murder requires you to listen in to what is going on and look around the room trying to piece it all together.

The Style Of The Crime

This is an awesome-looking game. The Sexy Brutale has each of its murders take place in a certain room and each room has a theme such as a bar, the casino, and the opera house to name just a few. The game has a kind of top down almost isometric viewpoint and the art style is great. It is a kind of chibi gothic thing going on and it is great. Each character is freaking weird and I love it!

The musical score could not fit this game any better. It has a kind of creepy jazz sound to it all and it fits in with the visuals perfectly. Know, I love the story here and think it is great. The personalities of the characters come across very well, but I do wish they were voice acted. I think some high-quality voice acting could have made this even better.

Mask Crusaders

As this is a masked ball, you have to wear a mask and this is the upgrade system in the game. Each time you solve one of the murders and save one of the weirdo guests, you are rewarded with a new mask and each new mask has a new ability. For example, the moth mask allows you to listen in from far away and the Clockwork Mask can let you rewind time. These abilities are fun to use and keep you wanting to solve the murders.

Pros:

• Each character is great in their own way
• The whole game is just a ton of fun to play
• The writing is very witty and clever
• I loved the whole gothic style that the game had

Cons:

• It was so good; I was left wanting more
• I do feel voice acting would have made it even better
