The Sims 4: Realm of Magic

Indeed you've played The Sims 4: Realm of Magic? Because who doesn't like to add some weird and wacky game pack to their favorite life simulator! This little number is an additional piece of the puzzle to making the base game as ridiculous as possible without fixing the core issues plaguing the title.

There have been so many content releases for the game since its release that we've lost track now. I believe The Sims 4: Realm of Magic is something like the 8th pack we've seen over 5 or 6 years? You keep feeling that the developers are just patching holes to make the game look pretty instead of fixing it, but hey, witches and wizards, am I right?

Of Sims and Spellcraft

Sometime over the life of The Sims 4's existence, we've gone from having a relatively regular outdoor vacation to managing the tantrums of witches and wizards. You get the feeling that these game packs are just being churned out at a pace to satisfy little trending niches at the time and to bank massively on the base game. Well, what can you expect? We'll have to see if this addition is any good.

It would come as a surprise that The Sims 4: Realm of Magic is decent and does add a bit of an exciting new edge to the game. You'll be able to raise your sims in the mystical world of Glimmerbrook, bound by magic and witchcraft. No, there's no presiding evil or any particular mission to accomplish; it's simply managing the everyday lives of fantasy folk, which is, in retrospect, intriguing.

You'll live your life learning spells, brewing potions, and raising mythical creatures as pets -standard fantasy lifestyle stuff. Given many unlockables and a few new inspired storylines, the gameplay becomes more engaging. However, as in typical game fashion, you do bore of the concept after a few hours.

The inherent problem with introducing magic into the home is that every task becomes automated. There's nothing more to do than sit back and watch your fantasy sims wave their wands as they manage their ethereal lifestyles. But let's not miss the point - The Sims 4: Realm of Magic does feel more refreshing compared to other game packs.

Simlish Incantations

I'll say that The Sims 4: Realm of Magic is perhaps the most enjoyable addition to the game I've played thus far. It does an excellent job of putting lesser efforts behind in favor of something a bit different yet accessible enough that players could get involved with. Living the casual lifestyle of witches and wizards has always been appealing, especially when they always seem to be distracted by a mission in other games.

The Sims 4: Realm of Magic does run its course pretty quickly, though. You'll feel left with nothing once you've uncovered most of the game pack offers. It's like adding automated robots into games like Animal Crossing: New Horizon - you'll enjoy their company at first, but suddenly everything gets too easy.

Round-Up - Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • A fresh concept for the base game
  • Managing fantasy lives with spells and magic is entertaining
  • The new mythical pets are an excellent addition

Cons:

  • The magic element makes trivial sim tasks redundant
  • Not much left to do after everything is unlocked
