The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is an asymmetric multiplayer survival horror game based on the iconic 1974 slasher film. Players can take on the role of members of the murderous Slaughter family, including the infamous Leatherface, or try to survive as one of their hapless victims.
As a huge fan of the original film, I was excited to experience the madness and mayhem for myself in video game form. Overall I found The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to be a gruesomely fun and intense cat-and-mouse experience, however some unfortunate design choices and bugs hold it back from reaching its full potential.
Like Dead by Daylight, the core gameplay captures the feeling of being hunted by the Slaughters incredibly well. As a survivor you truly feel vulnerable, having to sneak around in the dark while avoiding traps and listening for the sound of a revving chainsaw.
The destructible environments add to the tension as walls and doors can be smashed open by Leatherface at any moment. The killers have a variety of abilities that make each feel unique, such as Leatherface's chainsaw dash or the Hitchhiker's stun grenades. Matches are filled with frightening and frantic moments worthy of a horror classic like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Gore-geous Visuals
The visual presentation perfectly encapsulates the look and atmosphere of the films. Locations like the dilapidated Slaughter family farmhouse and macabre bone ornament decor are recreated in gruesome detail.
Character models like Leatherface and Grandpa look like they were ripped straight out of the movie. The kills are brutally violent, making each match feel like you are starring in your own Texas Chainsaw slasher flick. In many aspects, this game feels like an evolution of the failed Friday the 13th formula with its asymmetric multiplayer.
Sounds of Terror
The audio design is top-notch and truly sells the horror experience. The eerie soundtrack and sound cues like creaking doors ratchet up the tension to almost unbearable levels as you try to avoid detection.
The most obvious highlight is hearing Leatherface's chainsaw roaring directly behind you as you frantically sprint away, it always managed to make my heart race. The survivors' terrified screams and pleas for help make you feel the full hopelessness of their dire situation. In short, playing as one of the survivals is pure adrenaline.
Rough Around the Edges
While the core cat-and-mouse gameplay was thrilling and intense, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was clearly released in a rough, unpolished state. Severe matchmaking issues with long queue times often ruined the momentum.
Bugs and glitches sometimes broke the immersion, like Leatherface's chainsaw getting stuck during gameplay or some ragdolls going haywire. Small quality-of-life improvements could go a long way, like shortening the unnecessary intro cutscene each time Grandpa comes out. Overall the game just feels a bit clunky and unrefined. With some more work, it could truly shine and become a multiplayer horror classic.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre nails the terrifying atmosphere and frantic, brutal gameplay of a slasher movie turned video game. Some unfortunate technical and design issues hold it back from being a masterpiece, but I hope the developers can smooth out the rough edges over time and deliver on the full potential.

- Fantastic horror atmosphere
- Gruesomely violent
- Entertaining gameplay

Game Reviews
Become one of the main characters of a brutal horror movie of the last century and get out of the hunting grounds of a bloodthirsty maniac in the new survival horror game - The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Step into the skin of a hunted beast and fight for your life to the last in the game based on the iconic film.
New Survival Mode Horror
After the success of the game based on the famous Friday the 13th horror, the developers decided to take up a new project also based on the old popular horror. The action of the game will be fully consistent with the script of the original film. There is a crazy maniac with a chainsaw and not less crazy people who dared to sneak into his lair. The entire gameplay is reminiscent of Dead by Daylight. The player can play two roles:
- The role of the victim, who is only trying to survive
- The role of the hunter, whose freedom depends on the death of all bystanders
There is and always will be a balance
Whoever you are, one thing is clear - to survive, you have to mess with the other. Both survivors and maniacs have certain sets of characteristics that more or less equalize strength. Survivors can create obstacles for the maniac, set confusing traps, and simply run faster. The maniac, in turn, can break down obstacles, set traps, and use his special instincts to calculate his prey.
Abilities decide the course of the game
Cooperative mode helps players escape and experience the fear of being chased together. The maniac can't kill immediately and has to wait for the moment when an uncomplicated device will finish off the victim. At the same time, teammates can rescued the victim. However, such an outcome can set up the rescuer. Only a strategic plan and a cool head will help you optimally survive and kill.
