As the title indicates Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14: The Masters Historic Edition, is a sports game revolving around Golf in specific. Developed by EA Tiburon, and released on all major platforms in 2013, this version adds a lot of new content and features into the series, while retaining what made the title a staple for fans.
In addition to being the last game with Tiger Woods name in the title, this version expands upon the mini-series/events by giving players the opportunity to travel through time and experience legendary players in their prime in various unique fields. This is certainly a homage and tribute to golfers all around the world, the game feels like a love letter to the sport.
One of the game's most divisive aspects might be the fact that golfing here is as close to the real things as we had ever seen. This means that physics, simulations, wind resistance, and almost every detail having a perfect swing are present in the title. While this deviates from the more arcade-ish feeling of older titles from Tiger Woods PGA Tour, it definitely seems, feels and plays like a better game.
Exactly like its peers, as a sport game Tiger Woods PGA is not a title that you would feel the need to purchase every year, or every single version, because truthfully, they are very similar games in general. But this one might be worth the upgrade, it has a generous amount of new content, amazing new features, a tribute to the game’s history, while all the while retaining the better parts of its predecessors.
The Classics are a Classic for a Reason
One of the most fun parts of the game is facing the “bosses”. Bosses are some of the best players of all time, and your created character has the chance to play them, as well as recreate some of golf’s most iconic moments through history. What could have been a corny game mode, is actually one of the best parts of the game. Going back to face those players is accompanied by an entire overhaul of the game's identity, from the clothes, and shoes you are wearing, to the camera and filters. Defeating those players will unlock them as playable characters which only improves upon the experience for fans of golf.
Classic players do not mean classic mechanics, while the overall game is very similar to older versions of the game, some features are gone. Most notably the caddie feature, which would guide and assist the inexperienced through the game, it would act as a guide and provide suggestions on shots to newcomers. They are still present during practice, but players are left unassisted during official matches.
Finally, the quick-tournament feature is one of the best additions to the title, it allows players to quickly play the four major championships from Golf’s circuit. Which removes some of the grinding feeling of having to play countless minor tournaments for a chance to play golf’s biggest names.
One of the best entries of the series, features a love letter to golf fans, transporting them through time and allowing them to experience some of golf’s most iconic moments up close. Games based on sports can feel re-hashed and tiresome, but this one is worth a try especially if you are a fan of the game. Great features, quick-tournament, and huge amounts of content make Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14: The Masters Historic Edition, one of the best of its genre.
If you are a lover of the sport, or have enjoyed previous titles from the Tiger Woods PGA series, The Golf Club, and PGA 2K21 series, while being unafraid of an older game. I highly recommend this one!
