Timberman

Chop until you drop in Timberman, a casual game where your objective will be to cut trees as fast as humanly possible. It sounds simple, but that’s a great part of the charm of this retro-looking time-waster of a game.

Charming and undeniably entertaining, Timberman is a simple game with a peculiar way of reeling players into its wacky world of pixelated lumberjacks. The game offers a window into the early days of gaming when games would usually be more about the gameplay rather than telling compelling stories or having entertaining characters. Timberman is pure, arcade-style fun, and we’re all in for it.

Chop Down Trees

As the name of the game implies, your only task will be to cut wood in one of the game’s four variable environments. It sounds easy — and that’s because it is, for the most part, at least. Timberman’s gameplay is easy to grasp yet difficult to master, which has become somewhat of a casual game trademark these days.

Both the game’s visual style and the simplified nature of its gameplay might evoke some similarities with the massively successful Flappy Bird. The only things you’ll need to care about in the game are chopping as fast as you can, and keeping the tree’s branches in your sights.

While you cut down the tree’s trunk, you’ll notice that the branches might put a stop to your chopping sprees. Your character can’t cut the branches, so you’ll have to flip sides as you continue to cut the tree. It’s simple fun, but the game gets progressively faster, forcing the player to think fast if they hope to reach a high score.

That’s yet another element that Timberman has in common with its old-school arcade games forebears: it’s all about the high scores. Since there’s no plot or endgame to speak of, the only thing that matters is how far up the tree you make it before a branch hits you.

Collect and Compete

It would be pretty boring to just watch a 2D pixelated lumberman doing the same task over and over again and calling that a game. That’s why Timberman has over 32 unique Timbermen skins to collect and admire.

Granted, these skins are just minor collectibles, and they look like they came from McPixel, but collecting is a powerful incentive to any gamer worth their salt, and it’s no different in Timberman. Also worth mentioning: Flappy Bird appears as a playable character in this game, and that’s a huge plus in my book.

Timberman also includes an online multiplayer mode, where two players compete to see who can chop fastest and for the longest time. It’s fun to test your mettle against other players, but since the gameplay is the same as the singleplayer mode, and online leaderboards are already a thing, it might sound a bit redundant to have a multiplayer mode in the first place.

Regardless, Timberman is still a great game to waste some time without caring too much about complicated mechanics or complex plots. If you like simple and casual games, this one might be great for you.

Timberman is a great casual game that can be too simple for its own good, but its undeniably addictive gameplay will keep you hooked for hours on end.

Pros

  • Great gameplay that’s pretty easy to understand
  • Collecting characters can be as fun as it is challenging
  • Online leaderboards to compete against the world

Cons

  • Can feel repetitive after a while
  • Some Timbermen models look like mere recolors of other characters
  • Not enough background variety
