The basic rules of the tower defense genre are pretty simple: Build fortifications and defenses to prevent enemy forces from breaking a specific point. Many games use this formula to great effect, and even in its most stripped-down form, it’s great fun to play. VOIDCRISIS, however, is not the most stripped-down form of tower defense.
Developed and published by HEXADRIVE Inc., VOIDCRISIS is described as a four-player tower defense game that takes place on an ever-changing battlefield. Also, you won’t be playing as an omnipotent being or even a soldier. VOIDCRISIS puts you in the cockpit of an incredible mecha called Vital Armor.
So if you love anime, robots, co-op, or even just tower defense games, then here is everything you need to know about VOIDCRISIS before you dive into this awesome game.
Cooperation is Key
Nobody can wage war alone, even in a VA. Team up with four friends and gear up your mecha in VOIDCRISIS’s multiplayer mode. Survive wave after wave of enemies using carefully coordinated maneuvers and tactical actions with the other members of your team. When you are so severely outnumbered, every step needs to be communicated.
Despite their incredible power and potent abilities, your team’s VAs won’t even be the most powerful weapons at your disposal. Each member of your team will need superb spatial awareness, a strategic mind, and the ability to think several steps ahead.
Don’t bother memorizing any map’s layout, this isn’t Plants vs. Zombies. After each match, the turret placement, enemy routes, and even the path the projectiles will follow are completely changed. This constant mixing up of map elements keeps players sharp, and makes sure they are relying on their own skill and not a knowledge advantage of their surroundings.
Players will have to adapt on the fly and make sure that they can anticipate their enemy’s every move rather than waiting to react. Unique stage hazards will also show up to confuse and distract players without warning.
VOIDCRISIS will pull in any anime fan who grew up with shows like Gundam or Neon Genesis Evangelion. The game’s presentation is uniquely Japanese, with complexly designed robots that all have sharp, angular features to convey their speed and skill before they are even set in motion.
The game uses dynamic mechanical art shaders to bring the VAs to life, which achieves the effect of adding a unique layer of immersion and conveying the kind of awesome robot action that is only implied by model kit box art. In fact, with the game’s screenshot feature, you can make your very own awesome box art by capturing your VAs in cool battle poses.
