There's something magical about two deer going on a journey together. It's almost like we've seen this somewhere before. Those who remember - it didn't end well for the elder deer. Way to the Woods is a beautifully crafted platformer being crafted by indie developer Anthony Tan - using a cutesy concept as the basis for the adventure.
The game has faced multiple delays due to the development constraints of a single person. It's not out yet, but we can delve into what is already looking like a great little piece of media to get stuck in to. It's a game about deer in a post-apocalyptic world trying to find their way back to the woods - what's not to love?
Take Me Home
All we have to go by is a wee couple of trailers that have been released sporadically. The game was originally due to be released in 2020 but has not seen the light of day. Given the developer updates, it seems there is a little perfectionism involved here. It makes the concept all the more exciting.
'Way to the Woods' is a minimalistic adventure game depicting what we see from the trailer. It involves two deer sifting through an abandoned human world. The gameplay shows the two animals, adult, and child, solving puzzles to get past obstacles. That's likely to be the core focus of the game. It will thrive in unraveling the mysteries of how the world came to be.
Way to the Woods looks absolutely stunning. The cel-shaded graphics touch on a polished and vibrant color palette, contributing to the flashy animations. There doesn't seem to be much interaction between NPCs or story-building assets, leaving the narrative up in the air. The purpose, though, is seemingly to get back to the woods, as the title suggests.
There's a buzz of excitement surrounding Way of the Woods, given that similar games have been lauded by critics. Simplistic, brilliantly executed mechanics are paired with an emotional yet minimalistic storyline. We'll just have to be patient in waiting for this game to grace their intended consoles - hopefully, sooner rather than later.
Papa Don't Preach
There's a passion being put into 'Way to the Woods,' which is why we're eager for its release. The trailers depict an accessible game that pits the mechanics of Journey and teamwork of Banjo-Kazooie into a beautifully laden environment. Indie adventure games have been all the rage for the past decade, every reason to get excited for a brand new one.
If it does take a bit of time to create a masterpiece, we're happy to wait. We'd rather see a game that stands the test of time rather than delivers a rushed adventure that's average at best. The deer will soon be free to traverse the abandoned world and find a way right into our hearts and minds.
Pros:
- Minimalist adventure mechanics that usually provide an emotional journey
- Environments and visuals look gorgeous
- Cutesy deer characters look to bring an adorable storyline
Cons:
