Video games these days, eh? It’s all about open worlds, photo realistic graphics and finely tuned gameplay mechanics. What ever happened to a simple point and click game. Well, nothing actually, they are still around and some of them are very fun indeed. One of the best sub-genres of point and click games is the hidden object titles. These allow you to search and find the correct object to complete your task. It sounds mundane but it’s actually very satisfying and that does double when we are talking about Anomaly Hunter.
This game plays like other point and click games like Day Of The Tentacle, Escape from Monkey Island and Grim Fandango. However, is more like a big digital game of Where’s Waldo, but with time travel and a full-blown story. If this sounds like its right up your street then stick around, we are going to see if this one is just a run of the mill title, or is it an anomaly for us all to enjoy?
A Rare Find
Let’s begin with the visuals for this game. This one is very similar to the Where’s Waldo books we all read as a child. Which we don’t think is a coincidence. The hand drawn and cartoonish style is sublime and really suits the nature of this game. Plus, we loved all the pop culture references thrown into the mix too. Finding them is like a game within itself. So a thumbs up from us on the graphical front.
The gameplay by all accounts should be straightforward, but honestly, this game does a lot to mix things up. The game allows you to travel back in time to find clues and objects. Making each level like a puzzle to solve. Plus, the ability to explore and interact with each asset on screen makes for a much more interactive experience than a static screen with one thing to find.
Then lastly, the story. The fact that this game has a story at all is commendable but it’s a wonderful story at that. You get to meet some truly brilliant characters, learn lots about the world you inhabit and uncover secrets which will help you, the detective, solve their case and find the elusive ‘Guest of honor’.
The Verdict
Overall, this game is a find the object game at it’s core and as such, is limited in its scope. However, for a game of this nature, it does an excellent job of thinking outside the box. The time travel aspects are superb, the cohesive story is great, the detailed level design is phenomenal and the format overall sets this game apart from your average game in the genre.
We will say that it does become one note after a while but you know what you are getting into from the offset. So if this sounds like your thing, we say go for it.
Pros
- Cohesive and wacky story
- Visuals are great and pop culture references are on point
- Gameplay is surprisingly deep
Cons
- Does become repetitive
