I thought that when I got into Cosmoteer that it would be a game that would be too overwhelming for me. This is a massive sci-fi spaceship building game that when you read about it sounds very complex and complicated, but that is not the case at all. I have tried to get into games like this in the past, but always been put off by the difficulty curve. This game though is very in-depth, but it is also very easy to figure out.
Your Ship, Your Way!
The real draw to this game is the shipbuilding aspect of it. The game is done on a grid system. Each part of the space ship is made up of grids and it is up to you how to design your spaceship. The only limitation here is your imagination so you can place the crew’s quarters where you want, have as many cannons as you want, and decide the size, speed, and so on. It is very well done and for me, the most addictive part of Cosmoteer was building my spaceship.
A Space Pirates Life For Me
Of course, a ship is as only as good as the crew running it, and depending on the size of your ship, you may need a large crew. The thing I liked about your crew is that they operate on their own. Fixing things, reloading weapons and so on, but the way they operate can be dictated by the way you have your ship designed for example it is all well and good your crew being able to reload your cannon, but if the area they get the reloads from is far away from the actual cannon this will affect how efficiently they can do their job.
The Laws Of Physics
While you are free to design your ship in Cosmoteer anyway you want you have to obey the laws of physics. For example, if you make a smaller craft and have a load of engines on the rear side of it, it will be fast and nimble. A huge massive spacecraft will require a lot of work to make it travel through space and it will move much more slowly. Each attack you do can be tailored to hit a specific grid, this is a lot of fun and means you can target an enemy’s essential systems and it also adds a fair bit of strategy to combat.
Play Your Way
There is a single-player campaign here where you play as a bounty hunter flying your spacecraft taking down bad dudes and making money so you can improve your ship. However, the sandbox mode is where I had the most fun, just coming up with the craziest ship configurations I could and then making sure they could actually fly and operate efficiently was something I spent many hours doing. You can even jump online and put your own spaceship against your friends so you can see who came up with the best design as you battle it out!
I was very pleasantly surprised by what was on offer with Cosmoteer. This is a game that is a ton of fun and I could spend (and I actually did) hours and hours messing around designing all kinds of awesome space crafts. The single-player mode is way better than you would think and while I have only dabbled in the multiplayer what I have seen so far looks like a lot of fun.
