CULTIC

Man does CULTIC take me back! It takes me back to the days of mid to late 90s PC gaming when 3D graphics cards were all the rage and would become out of date within two months of you buying one. Designed to have a real old school feel to it, this is a game that has had me very excited for quite some time now. It does have a demo on the official steam page so I highly recommend that you check it out. If you are a fan of those older style shooters, you are in for a real treat with this game I can assure you of that.

Rise From Your Grave

Was that an Altered Beats reference? You bet your ass it was! Anyway, CULTIC is not too deep on story as this is designed to be a bit more old-school. However, the premise of what is going down here is cool. There is this crazy, evil, and sadistic cult and as you have just risen from your grave, you need to do all that you can to make sure that they are the ones that are getting put back in the ground and it is not you! As I said, the story is not really the focus here, but I do feel that there is more than enough for you to get invested in all the killing and slaying that you will be doing.

Always With Your Finger On The Trigger

While I approach a game like CULTIC with the intention of running in all guns blazing and using every weapon, I have to make myself feel like a badass. This is a first-person shooter that does actually have more depth than you would think. Do not get me wrong, you do get an impressive arsenal of cool looking weapons and you can just go for the throat and kill, kill, kill. However, you can be a bit more cerebral and methodical in your approach. You can make use of things like traps, cover, and so on to be more cautious with your attacks if you like. This is a game that throws a great deal of enemies your way so chances are, more often than not your plan will go to hell and you will have to think on your feet.

Look At That 3D Graphics Acceleration!

I remember back in 1999, Aliens vs Predator had just come out on the PC and ours was not up to the task of playing it so my dad went and bought a fancy new 3D graphics card so we could play it. I swear by the time 1999 came to an end that graphics card was obsolete! Things are way better now, let me tell you. Anyway, CULTIC has a kind of late 90s style to the visuals. It has nice and chunky sprites and it truly does have a real sense of old-school charm about it that I get a huge kick out of. It performs very well too; this is a game that is not scared to throw a ton of enemies at you and there is no slow-down. While it does have an old-school to it, it does have some modern stuff too like more impressive lighting and shadow effects.

Pros:

• I love the old-school charm this game has
• It feels like something I would have played back in 99 and that is awesome
• There is an impressive arsenal of weapons to make use of
• You are free to play the game in any way you like

Cons:

• It is not all that story driven
• You may not find it as charming if you did not play these types of games back in the 90s and early 00s
