Ever since Brendan Fraser and the cast from Return of the Mummy showed us that ancient Egypt belonged in the horror genre, there have been several attempts at bringing this action to the interactive medium of gaming. We have seen movie game adaptations starring Dwayne Johnson among others, but none have captured the essence of the undead Egyptians to the point of mass critical success. Well, FORWARNED aims to change all of that.
This game plays like horror titles such as Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Plasmaphobia, Outlast and several other spooky titles of this ilk. Howver, FORWARNED aims to be the quintessential Ancient Egyptian horror. Does this game rise and reach this honour, or should it remain buried in the tomb? We find out in our review of FORWARNED.
Are You FOR or Against?
Firstly, lets talk about the gameplay. This game is your typical walking simulator meets survival horror, where combat isn’t an option and hiding is your best form of defence. In our opinion, this is an excellent format for games such as this and in the case of FORWARNED, it works a treat. Then when you combine the VR functionality of this game, you can’t deny that it is spooky, atmospheric and immerses the player in the action.
As for the graphical detail, we can’t fault it when you take into account that this is an indie studio. However, this game is equally nothing to be blown away by. The graphics are on par with the aforementioned games such as Outlast or Amnesia. The game focuses on story, detailed environments and atmosphere and to it’s credit, this is an excellent decision. However, in 2021, you can’t help but expect more in terms of visual splendour.
Then lastly, you have the narrative for this game. As you would expect, the situation is a vehicle to deliver jump scares and cheap tricks. So the story while not horrible is far from the premium grade of horror stories found in the Silent Hill or Dead Space series for example. It’s serviceable don’t get us wrong, just don’t expect a nuanced narrative here.
Overall, we are rather excited to see how FORWARNED turns out. We enjoy the clear nod to Plasmaphpbia, the Ancient Egypt theme, the VR functionality and the familiar walking sim horror gameplay.
However, the game is likely to be rather lacklustre in areas such as the graphics, lack of unique core mechanics and rather bare bones storyline. We would say that paying full RRP for this game could be a gamble. However, that’s not to say that the gamble wont pay off.
