One of the loveliest looking games to be released in 2022 is Islets. This is a gorgeous looking Metroidvania style of game with a truly breathtaking aesthetic that is sure to make people fall in love with the game, the world, and its hero. There is no shortage of this style of game out there, but it is easy to see why this one has gotten so many people talking and excited about it. I wanted to throw my hat in the ring and share my thoughts on what I think could be one of 2022's hidden gems!

Bringing It All Together

The story of Islets is about a young warrior and adventurer called Iko. The world that he calls home has been fractured and is now a series of floating islands. He is going to travel to each one of these lands to try and reignite the magnetic core in each one so that they can be joined together once again. I like the whole premise here and Iko is a very likable character that is easy to root for.

People Make The World Go Round

Each time you read something about Islets, “wholesome” is a word that seems to get thrown around a lot, and for good reason. This is a very wholesome, character driven kind of game that is all about bringing people together. It is about bringing these floating islands back together, getting to know people, and making deep and meaningful connections with them and that is what I think is really going to be the heart of this experience for most of you guys.

A Clever Way To Move Worlds!

At first glance and from the initial couple of trailers we have seen, Islets in many ways looks like your typical Metroidvania style of game and in many ways it is. It is a 2D game where you have to explore, find new items, solve puzzles, fight enemies, and so on. What I think is interesting about this game is that you can move the islands so you can explore areas that were previously locked to you. It ticks all of the boxes of what makes a good Metroidvania style of game and I can see many people getting hooked on this the same way they did games like Hollow Knight and Ori and the Blind Forest.

A True Work of Art

There has always been a debate in regards to if video games are art and I think that a game like Islets proves that they well and truly are. These gorgeous hand painted backgrounds and levels are just amazing to look at. Seriously the artistry and the attention to detail in each area is something that has to be seen in action to truly appreciate. I liked how each floating island had its own theme and when you enter a new area for the first time, you never know what to expect. The imagination on display here is truly remarkable and there is just no way you cannot fall in love with the world they have created here.

Even if you are getting a bit tired of Metroidvania games, I still highly recommend that you take a closer look at Islets. This is truly something special! It looks like a storybook/cartoon that has come to life. It has a charming and very “wholesome” setting and story and the gameplay is managing to walk that fine line of being fun, but also very challenging. This is sure to be a game that features on more than a few games of the year lists!
