My Singing Monsters Playground is a party game based on the popular My Singing Monsters series. Which I have to be honest and say until I played this game, I was completely ignorant about. Still, as someone that loves party games, I thought this seemed like a fun time so I decided that I would give it the good old college try and see how it holds up. Especially so as it is coming out very close to another party game that stars a popular plumber you may have heard of.
In My Singing Monsters Playground, you have three game modes to take part in. Solo Gauntlet is the single player offering. The idea here is that you pick your monster and then you have to win all of the games.
If you lose, it is game over, it is a fun mode, but I wish there was a bit of story or something to make it a bit more cinematic. As it is, the games are just kind of thrown together.
While it may be lacking in the cinematic department, the game does have a ton of personality. I am completely ignorant of this franchise so I can only take it as it comes in this game, but I liked it. It is bright, the monster characters are cute and fun. Plus, the whole game is nice and bright with a kind of Pixar/DreamWorks thing going on with the art.
Monsters Need Friends Too
Tournament is the main multiplayer mode. Here you can play with up to three other players and you get to take turns picking a game. You earn diamonds and if you come in first place you get three, second place two, and third place one, last place gets none. The player with the most diamonds at the end wins.
This is only available in local co-ops, there is no online which I feel is a missed opportunity. I do think that it is really missing some kind of game board. I know that they would have been accused of ripping off Mario Party, but I think it would have made it feel a more rewarding and complete experience. The other game mode is free play and this just lets you pick a game and play it. You can play tournament and free play as a solo player too if you want.
Games, I Head You Had Games!
There are 25 mini games in My Singing Monsters Playground. I do feel that this is probably the minimum you could get away with in a game like this. However, to be fair, I would say that ¾ of these mini games are actually well designed and a great deal of fun. So perhaps it is better you have less good mini games than a ton of mediocre for the sake of variety?
There is a mixture of game styles with free for all, two vs two, and three vs one, similar to the way that Mario Party does it. Molten Madness is my favorite game, you have to block these molten balls that come flying at you, but the gimmick is to deflect them at other players.
I have to say that My Singing Monsters Playground turned out to be way more fun than I thought it would be. This is a game that is great to play with friends. It looks like it may be lacking in the mini game department, but there were none that I actually disliked. I just feel that if it had some kind of board game mechanic like Mario Party, or some kind of story to play through it would have been even better.
- I liked the colorful cast of monster characters
- The mini games were way better than I thought they would be
- It is a lot of fun to play with your buddies
- It is a perfect game for a family to play together
- I do miss a board of some kind to link the mini games together
- I feel that not having online play was a mistake
