With enemies blocking his path every step of the way, he'll utilize his book of stickers to smash, hop on, and defeat any foe he finds. Full of humor, colorful graphics, and silly characters, Paper Mario: Sticker Star is a lighthearted adventure that will definitely make you smile.

Main Game Features

  • Explore a paper version of the Mushroom Kingdom
  • Tricky puzzles to solve
  • Action-based platforming with turn-based combat

Story

In Paper Mario: Sticker Star, the Mushroom Kingdom is in trouble once again, after Bowser and his goons interrupt the annual Sticker Fest. Like in other Super Mario Bros games, Bowser wants to achieve ultimate power, and this time he tries to use the magical Sticker Comet to do so. Breaking apart the comet into six Royal Sticker pieces, Bowser unexpectedly throws the Mushroom Kingdom into chaos. After being knocked unconscious in the commotion, Paper Mario wakes up and partners with Kersti, an energetic sticker pal who helps lead the way. To defeat Bowser and bring peace back to the Mushroom Kingdom, Paper Mario and Kersti will have to travel through six unique regions, recovering the Royal Stickers from the villains who have collected them. While the story is a bit underwhelming, it's still a joy to explore the different colorful regions, discovering new enemies, power-ups, and more.

Gameplay

While Paper Mario: Sticker Star shares many similarities with other Paper Mario games, it also makes some notable deviations from the formula, highlighting combat over storytelling. In your quest to retrieve the Royal Stickers and save the Mushroom Kingdom, you'll have to travel through a slew of troubled worlds, ranging from snow-covered mountains to pleasant fields. As you explore, you'll have to solve puzzles by using special stickers, allowing you to progress to further areas. For a special view of their surroundings, players can activate Paperization mode, which shows extra secrets and hidden paths.

The biggest change in Paper Mario: Sticker Star are the stickers themselves, which are used to both solve puzzles and fight in combat. As you explore, you'll gather up a hoard of stickers, but with limited inventory space, you'll need to use them or lose them. Each sticker is only useful for one attack, so if you're not prepared, some fights will be much more difficult than intended. Luckily, you can buy extra stickers from characters, using gold coins you collect during your travels. In this way, combat can be super easy or extremely hard, depending on how well you manage your sticker collection.

Conclusion

While some of the changes in Paper Mario: Sticker Star feel like a step back, there's still enough enjoyment here for fans of RPGs or other Mario games. Running around the Mushroom Kingdom while collecting stickers and solving puzzles is loads of fun, and you might be surprised how challenging the game can be.
