Pokémon Ultra Sun is a thoughtfully designed game developed in 2017 for the long-running series. This particular game focuses on the Alola region, a sunny and warm location similar to Hawaii and other tropical islands.
With so many games in the Pokémon series, it’s hard for a developer to make something that stands out. Pokemon Ultra Sun has managed to do this, by listening to the feedback of the community and easing pain points in the game.
Pokémon Ultra Sun is an update on Pokémon Sun, one of the first Pokémon games to radically alter the gameplay style for Pokémon games. Pokémon Ultra Sun is an upgrade from that, with a rich selection of new Pokémon, new mini-games, and more to keep players busy.
Lots of Cutscenes
Some players have complained about the sheer number of cutscenes in Pokémon Ultra Sun. These cutscenes help push the story along, but they hamper those who want to speed run the game. Speed running or running a game as fast as they possibly can, is popular with streamers and other dedicated players of the game. If you’re not hung up about getting through the game as fast as possible, the cutscenes are enjoyable and do add to the game.
Familiar Story, New Twists
This is an update to the original game, so it’s important to realize the plot is largely the same. Players are still a new player on the island’s Aloha region and are still taking part in the “Island Challenge” to try and grow as a Pokémon trainer.
There are a few new updates to the tale, which do make things better. In Pokémon Sun, the generic villain, Team Rainbow Rocket, decided to blow up the world because they like beautiful things. In Pokemon Ultra Sun, the story is a little bit more developed and there’s more reasoning behind their actions.
This by no means that the plot is good—as with many past Pokémon games, eloquent storytelling and rich plot are not major aspects of the game. It just means their actions are better explained, particularly in the last quarter of the game.
Plenty of New Things to Explore
Mostly, the additions take the form of new Pokémon to catch, new pathways where a wall used to be, and more enemies to fight off. Most of the changes were made not to alter the game and make it into a new one, but to make the original better.
If you ever traveled through the original version in Pokemon Sun and felt like an area was rather sparse, go back and look at it in Ultra Sun. Chances are, that area was updated with new things to find and explore.
Pokemon Ultra Sun is certainly a good choice for players who never played the original. It’s also a great choice for players who enjoyed Pokemon Sun and are feeling nostalgic. The fresh new content will help them get even more out of the experience. Pokemon Ultra Sun is an overall good game, with a huge number of fresh Pokémon and places to explore.
