One thing I did not see coming in 2024 was the Silent Hill 2 Remake. Scheduled for release on the 8th of October. I am so excited about this game that I wanted to do a little preview of all the things I have learned about the game so far. As a massive fan of this series, I honestly thought that this was pretty much just left to die, but that is not the case and now we are getting what is arguably the best entry in the series remade.
It’s Been A Very Long Time!
It is crazy how great Konami were for so many years and with games like the Silent Hill 2 Remake, I hope that they can get back to how prolific they were with great games all the way from the days of the NES to the PlayStation 2 era of gaming. Silent Hill fans have been left with nothing for such a long time. P.T. was awesome and gave us an idea of what was to come, but they canceled Silent Hills and then the stuff with Kojima had fans wondering what the heck Konami was doing! The last actual Silent Hill game was 2012’s Silent Hill Downpour which was ok to be fair.
A Very Good Message
One way that Konami has gotten us hyped for the Silent Hill 2 Remake is by releasing the awesome, Silent Hill: The Short Message which was a free short game, similar to what they did with P.T. and Silent Hills, only this time it is actually going to lead to something. I thought that The Short Message was a fantastic way to give old school Silent Hill fans a little taste of Silent Hill, but at the same time, it was a great way for those new to the franchise to get an idea of what it is all about. I am pretty sure they are not connected, but I highly recommend that you check out, Silent Hill: The Short Message before jumping in with the remake.
What Horror Awaits?
The Silent Hill 2 Remake has been getting compared to The Resident Evil 4 Remake and for good reason. The gameplay we have seen looks very similar to that game. It is a 3rd person over the shoulder view style of game and the bits of gameplay that I have seen so far make this look a bit more action oriented than the original game was. To be honest, I am not freaking out about this as at the end of the day, I am sure Konami is keeping a lot of things under wraps. However, I for one, and happy that they have modernized the game a bit, hey I love the original, but I would imagine for someone who did not play it back on the PlayStation 2 or original Xbox, it has probably aged rather poorly in the gameplay department.
A Message From My Dead Wife
Not much has been said about the story in the Silent Hill 2 Remake, but the story was one of the best things about the original. We play as James Sutherland, the same guy from that original game. We get a strange message from our deceased wife saying that she is waiting for us in Silent Hill. We go to see what this is all about and end up pulled into a horrific nightmare that we cannot seem to escape. Referencing the Resident Evil 4 Remake again, I do wonder if they will take the same approach with the story here. That game had the same story, but it was presented in a different more fleshed out way, that is what I am hopeful they go for here.
While Konami is keeping many things about the Silent Hill 2 Remake very close to their chest, this game is honestly right up there with my most anticipated games of the year. Not only are we getting this, but we also had Silent Hill: The Short Message and there is a new Silent Hill movie in the works too! For a franchise that seemed dead, we Silent Hill fans are having it pretty good right now.
Pros:
- I love the whole visual style of the game
- It looks even more creepy than the original
- The gameplay looks to be very modernized
- The original told an amazing story, and I am sure this will too
Cons:
- Some people have said the gameplay is too action focused
- I do wonder what they will do to keep the story fresh
