Spyro, everybody’s favorite video game dragon, has made a return in The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning. This game focuses on the origins of Spyro, allowing fans to see and play through the beginnings of the famous purple dragon and see how it all began. Falling right in line with the other stories canonically and offering better graphics and a newer playing style for this game, it is a great refreshment in terms of playing, while keeping a nostalgic feel looking into the past of the lore the series offers.
As with most older games, The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning is nothing special by today’s terms. However, it does not matter much for games in The Legend of Spyro series. Keeping true to their art style with cartoony drawings reminding one of Sonic the Hedgehog games, the artists of The Legend of Spyro do not have to worry about new advancements in rendering technology and animation, as their fan base tends to enjoy the nostalgic art style, making it feel true to the nature of Spyro and his other games.
The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning takes a bit of a turn from traditional Spyro gameplay, focusing more on action-based gameplay rather than platforming. In the new style of gameplay, Spyro has also been given a variety of combat moves and breath attacks, including fire, electricity, ice, and earth. These come in both long range and short range variations, as well as “furies,” which are huge blasts of the elemental energy.
The plot begins with a large, red dragon, Ignitus, who is put in charge to watch over the up-and-coming brood of eggs. Within this brood is a special purple dragon egg, said to be the director of that era’s fate, only coming once every ten generations (120 years). The antagonist of the story, Dark Master, knows of this special dragon and wishes to put an end to it. The game follows Spyro as he grows up in preparation of facing Dark Master.
The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning should come with no shock that it received overwhelming support from its community and very dedicated fanbase. Spyro is loved by many and a game playing through his origins made his fans go crazy and fall in love with his story and franchise even more.
Spyro is loved by many, and this game just takes the cake with fans. Having new mechanics that are somewhat breaking tradition rides a fine line, but The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning pulls it off and is able to make it refreshing instead of annoying.
Offering a look into the past instead of continuing a story line and trying to top the last, it offers new environments, new focuses, and new needs of the players to complete the game. I rate The Legend of Spyro A New Beginning with an 8/10.
