Horror comes in many shapes and sizes. In Trenches - World War 1 Horror Survival Game, it comes in the form of jump scares, suspense, and doses of psychological horror that will leave you shivering. The game places you behind enemy lines in 1917, where you must look for clues and avoid getting caught.
All you have on your person is a trench whistle. You will have to rely on this and your senses in order to survive. The decisions you make can cause you real pain and regret later, unfolding the tale of World War I like never before.
Very Short Gameplay
Most people are able to play through this game in 30-60 minutes. The point of the game isn’t to play for a long time, but to be shaken down to your core while you play it. This game would be perfect for a weekend warrior who doesn’t have a lot of time for gaming but might not be so valuable to someone who wants a longer game.
Extreme Horror
Trenches is not suitable for anyone under the age of 18 for good reason. The game contains blood and gore, but also decapitation, nudity, and other violent themes. The game is so scary, many players find they need to pause the game and take breaks to breathe—and that was just during the beta testing.
The game has seen a lot more polish since the first early access game play, and is likely to be even scarier than it was before. It’s as creepy as Slenderman, but with a real-world historical feel that makes it hard to remind yourself it’s only a game. Play at your own risk.
Some Minor Issues
In the early access game, there were a few problems that made the game a bit less enjoyable than it could have been. One of the biggest problems is that there are actually too many jumpscares. After being exposed to something jumping out at you enough times, it becomes a lot less scary.
Fortunately, there’s an option in the game that allows you to reduce how often jumpscares occur. By setting this to a minimal level, it actually improves the game and makes it scarier.
Another minor issue with the game is that a lack of checkpoints makes finishing the game frustrating. You could have 8 of the 9 needed clues to escape, get trapped in an unlucky corner, and have to start completely over with 0 clues. These issues are overall minor, and it’s possible they’ll be fixed in the full version. Even if they aren’t, it doesn’t detract from the game enough to make the game unplayable, just not quite as fun as it could be.
This game has a few flaws, but they shouldn’t put you off getting the game if you are a fan of horror. This game is a refreshing and original offering that will leave you shivering in your boots. If you’re not a fan of extreme horror, this game is probably one you should run screaming away from. It’s extremely scary.
