WALL-E the video game is an action-adventure created by developers Heavy Iron Studios, Asobo Studio, Helix, and Savage Entertainment. It is a single-player game published by THQ in partnership with The Walt Disney Company, and Disney Interactive Studios. Released on June 24, 2008, for PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 3, Wii, Nintendo DS, Windows, and Mac OS, it could be played anywhere.
Robotic Gameplay
WALL-E was obviously based and follows the same reality established in the Oscar-nominated movie of the same name. It portrays a dystopian future in the year 2805 where Earth has become inhabitable to humans, and only WALL-E was left behind repeating endlessly his own tasks. The game itself however took creative liberties to enhance gameplay and allow better exploration of the nine playable levels it had.
Fans of platformers will find that WALL-E doesn’t really bring anything fresh to the genre, instead, it relies on tried and true level designs that are engaging and fun. And honestly, this is fine, since it is aimed towards kids and the young audience which, at first, the movie targeted. Controls are fairly simple and easy, and allow for anyone to have a blast playing through the levels.
Somethings Were Left Behind
For all the fun that WALL-E is able to create as a platformer, it has severe issues with combat. WALL-E was designed as a non-combatant robot, and to see that the adaptation was poorly executed only makes this creative freedom taste sour. The positive counterpart is that it looked extremely good for a game released in 2008. The performance and graphics ran smoothly, and the level designs were perfect for young kids. They were simple, colorful, vibrant, and all-around fun to explore.
As one could expect, given the demographic the puzzles involved in WALL-E aren’t challenging, but the game creates enough manners in which WALL-E can actually surpass obstacles. This keeps the game fresh, and fun. Racing levels make an appearance here, and they are surprisingly some of the most brilliant moments in the game. There are little easter-eggs and unlockable pieces of content related to the movie that rounds up the progression of the game.
Conclusion
WALL-E is a platformer for kids, or families trying to enjoy gaming besides each other. It doesn’t revolutionize or propose anything fresh to the genre but executes whatever it proposes itself to do pretty well. WALL-E is a fun title, that shines through its simplicity, and accessibility. While the game lacks the heart that made the movie a masterpiece, this isn’t by any means a bad adaptation to video games.
For the fans of titles such as Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Ratchet & Clank, Rayman, New Super Lucky’s Tales, and Sly Cooper, this is a decent title if you manage your expectations. It is also a great game to play with the children in your family, and a cool way to introduce them to this amazing movie.
