Don't you just love it when a game does exactly as it says on the can? Airport X-Ray Simulator is precisely that: a straightforward game that lets you live your dream of working for the TSA. You won't find mystical realms to save or a deep meta-narrative here – only pure, unadulterated airport fun. If that's your thing.

Job simulator games have always been a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. I work as a PC repair technician, but that doesn't mean I don't have a few dozen hours sunk into PC Building Simulator, and you bet I've played more hours of TCG Card Shop Simulator than I'm willing to admit. Still, Airport X-Ray Simulator can be a bit of an acquired taste, even for the most die-hard fans of the genre.

Contraband and Crooks

As an x-ray technician, your job translates into checking luggage for any prohibited items. Of course, not all of these "dangerous" items are as exotic as guns or top-secret documents. From time to time, a cheeky passenger comes by trying to smuggle fireworks or some "Mary Jane." Your job is to ruin their fun, you monster.

The game is as straightforward as they come, and maybe that's why it's so fun. Once you grow used to the gameplay loop, even the most unassuming items can spice up your routine. Mauve that's what real customs officers tell themselves to make their work easier.

A Variety of Oddities

Something that really took me by surprise is the sheer variety of items the base game comes with. For an early access title, I was expecting to see only a handful of knick-knacks here and there. However, Airport X-Ray Simulator is jam-packed with content.

Imagine my shock when I opened a suitcase and found a rosary – only it wasn't a rosary: it was made of silicone beads, and the ring at the top told me that thing probably wasn't made for praying. I never expected a game like this to get freaky, and yet, here we are.

I have no doubt the developers of Airport X-Ray Simulator can only go up from here, making the game even crazier with each update. That's precisely what happened with House Flipper, which started as a straightforward home renovation game and eventually turned into you preparing shelters for the nuclear apocalypse.

Design Your Workplace

Something that I wasn't expecting in this game is that you have to design your entire working space. From counters to computers and other devices, every aspect of your customs office is yours to design.

It might seem like a trivial addition, but coming up with the most optimized design can really help you complete tasks faster. I'm not exactly the best at this, but even someone like myself could design a competent workspace with the tools the game gives you – and that's truly saying something, considering how messy my TCG Card Shop Simulator shop can get during peak hours.
