Do you like bears? Do you want to see a bear? How about to be a bear? If you like the prospect of anything I’ve just said then perhaps Bear Simulator by Farjay.com is for you. Based entirely on the concept of being a bear, it’s up to you to explore and battle other animals in order to learn more about the world you inhabit and to bear its wonders.
So off the bat, you are a bear. Your objectives are pretty simple and straightforward: you explore, learn more about the world and find many cosmetic items which can all be viewed in a small window in the corner of the screen dubbed “Bear Face Cam.”
The game takes place entirely in first person which I found to be very amusing. Unlike Goat Simulator, which views from third person, you take on a more personal experience as the Bear. You walk around and consume things, be it bugs, mushrooms, plant life, burgers or anything else you can get your paws on while fighting off other animals that seek to do you harm.
When you eat something, you may gain a benefit from it. It could add on or take away from your stats of Strength, Intelligence, Dive and more. This regularly gives you pause to think about the benefits and consequences of what you’re eating. Sadly, due to rude criticism, the game will no longer be receiving updates.
There is an amusing and pleasant atmosphere throughout the game, as it seems to pride itself as one that does not take itself too seriously and I find it undeniably charming. The frame rate drops sometimes and the controls suffer every now and again but you still get the feeling the developers put a lot of love into it. There is a great deal of humour to be felt in some of the jokes and references made throughout. It treats you well in regards of finding a purpose to travel; perhaps you want to locate more hats or aesthetic pieces for your bear den.
The world is quite big and I am appreciative of that in a game like this. Providing the player with 7 different regions from the beaches to the forests to the mountain tops, there is a lot to see and experience with this title. I particularly enjoyed the areas that all looked to have once been populated with humans. It bears the question, where did they all go?
There is a satisfying diversity to the environment to be found in the game. Some areas are easy to traverse by simply strolling along a beach. Other areas are a bit harder, requiring an element of platforming where you jump across the abyss in an attempt to progress.
This is a charming and harmless game that managed to be an amusing escape into a diverse and interesting world populated by intriguing characters and chock full of jokes and puns. If you like a game that doesn’t offend and is simply enjoyable to play, give it a go.
