First rearing its head in 2006, Sandlot Games’ Cake Mania series were at first notable for being one of the first games to implement a free-to-play with advertisements model. The cooking/time management series took inspiration from the likes of the Cooking Mama series, and by 2008, was already on its third main series entry, aptly titled Cake Mania 3.

Bakers Gonna Bake

The story of Cake Mania 3 centers around series protagonist Jill Evans, as she prepares for her wedding day. A pretty strange situation occurs, leading to Jill being tossed through time, through Ancient Egypt, Revolutionary France, Ancient China, and many more. Jill has to find her way back to her time the only way she knows how - by baking cakes - and she must make it back home before the wedding ceremony begins.

A Dummy’s Guide to Cake-Making

In order to bake, the player must guide Jill to use various machines, which correspond with customer orders. Using certain machines and certain ingredients creates certain cakes - and you’ll need to quickly learn how to use these quickly and efficiently, all whilst multitasking to keep your queue attended to and your waiting customers happy. The game never really gets too difficult, but if you’re a stressy person then you’ll probably wig out a little here and there.

Should I Wait or Should I Go?

Keeping your waiting customers happy is imperative to success, as if you don’t give them enough to do whilst they wait, they’ll simply leave - and your time will have been wasted on making their orders. To keep them happy, you’ll need to give them cupcakes to pass the time, or alternatively let them watch TV.

Gone in a Flash

With Sandlot smashing the series out so fast year after year, the games were bound to end up feeling a little rushed and rather boring compared to the competition. Created in Flash, the games are all incredibly basic, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find someone who really wants to see them through to completion.

Despite the time period shtick, Cake Mania 3 really suffers from a lack of variety in terms of gameplay - and you’re really not going to want to come back for seconds.
