Starpoint Gemini 3

The genre of the 4X games has a lot of great titles added in the last few years such as Stellaris and Endless Space 2. Of course, 4X stands for eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate, and this means that every good 4X game has to be full of varied content. Now, other games in the Starpoint Gemini series like Starpoint Gemini Warlords were part of that genre, however, they took a completely different turn this time. It's not common to change the entire gameplay style of a franchise, but it's proven to be doable. But how much are they changing for Starpoint Gemini 3 and is it any good? Well, let's talk about that.

What's different

Starpoint Gemini 3 isn't out yet, but we've seen some content already and a lot of things have changed.

While in Starpoint Gemini Warlords it was all about building your empire, with lots of diplomacy involved and strategy to expand, things are quite different. Starpoint Gemini 3 introduces interactions with the NPCs face to face in the first person for the very first time in the series. The entire game is much more personal than what we've seen in the series before, being much more personal and on a smaller scale.

Early access

The game still doesn't have a clear and real release date, as it is currently in early access, and it has been for basically a year now. It has changed a lot after the original, weird trailer they presented, and now we've got a clearer view of what the final game is going to be like. It's the team's most ambitious project to date, however, let us remind you that we are talking of a team of only 15 people.

It has an alright reception by both the critics and the users after the early access went public in September 2019. But some clear issues aren't really easy to fix with updates and maybe even the final release of the game. These are issues that are part of the core of the game, and we'll talk about these issues next in our review.

Starpoint Gemini 3 is an interesting title, not only did it change a lot from what we've previously seen in the series., it actually got into a completely different game style. But how well did that work for this title? Well, in theory, it works great, it's fun, easy to understand, and interesting to explore. There are cool mechanics and lots of nice missions to play.

The main issue with the game comes when you look at the way it's written, and even at the dialogues. The characters are bland and boring, and our main character is just really annoying. It's terrible to play a game where the main character is a pain to be around. But that's not the only issue with how the game is written, even though the experience is generally enjoyable the main story isn't. It kinda gets in the way of the experience.
